Hey is there a good place to upload mp3s to stream? Like Tindeck, but somewhere where I can upload stuff not my own? Because I picked up some rare punk 7"s this weekend I'd like to share.

I feel it's appropriate to mention that I'd never heard of Budgie until I played Brütal Legend. I was also never particularly into Motorhead but the song In the Black always scratches my E-pedaling/superduper4/4 head-banging itch.

Great song. Though in the game, it was pretty out of place.

Hey SF, what would you think about starting an album review thread? Posting youtube videos is cool and all, but I'd like a place to post more in-depth reviews.

    Speaking of Albums.

Andy McKee's new record is out today. I just got it a few minutes ago and am listening to it now. There is substantially more orchestration on this record than I was expecting. But this is kind of what you can expect, guitarwise.

I don't see why you can't do that in this one.

If I ever posted in it my reviews would read something like

    CHANGE - MIRACLES

Aaaaaaaa this album is so fucking gooooooood this is how you do italo god damnit I love Jacques Fred Petrus why does James Robinson have such a great voice I mean really

It's not like anyone would give a shit though. Nobody on the board has similar tastes to mine. Aside from you and a few other users liking some fusion and prog rock I'm into.

I'll just save everybody some time. Here are some albums that are fucking great that you should listen to.

And here is an album you should never listen to.

If you wanna do a review thread which is already sort of what this and gamebros is, you certainly don't need my permission. I just think it's unnecessary.

EDIT: Ohnoes I left out Endtroducing, Blue Lines et al. This is what happens when you like too much music

Whenever I see the car wash cover I just want to hear Shake Your Rump. Yes I am aware that I have two of the records sampled in that on my mosaic.

Oh no, the Shaggs is exactly the kind of music you should be listening to.
Better than the beatles, you know.

Philosophy Of The World is the worst album ever recorded.

I could force three little girls with no talent or skill to play in a three-piece band and write all the songs, too. And it would sound pretty shitty AS YOU MIGHT EXPECT. Oh, I'm sorry, it would be outsider music. Where's my million dollars and 9/10 review on Pitchfork.

I can understand people liking Jandek or Captain Beefheart. Not The Shaggs. Power noise is more musical than The Shaggs.

Ha, man I'm totally being facetious. I don't like the Shaggs, either.

It's fascinating, though, that out of their wide-eyed innocence and complete lack of conventional musicality, that their music is consistant in style; Drum beats don't make sense, bizarre childlike lyrics, strums on every syllable.

    It's like Schoenburg for Kids.

Who writes outsider music and makes a million dollars, though?

Because it causes me intense physical pain, and I must turn it off. I am not being comedic, it is indescribably uncomfortable to listen to.

It is not incredible to me that they were able to write the same song 12 times. That is not consistency, that is lack of range.

I guess I could see where people who were not instantly compelled to turn it off could find it funny, but I swear that anyone who genuinely likes it must be being intellectually dishonest and are on some kind of serious hipsterish "more sophisticated than thou" trip. Or they have brain damage.

I get a Plan Nine From Outer Space so-bad-it's-fucking-funny vibe from them.

They are not in any way good musicians and their backstory is incredibly sad, but it doesn't hurt me to listen.

So bad it's good really does not exist for me in music. It's enjoyable, or it isn't. Even if it did The Shaggs would be so bad it's horrible. I am physically unable to listen to them. My hands will turn it off even if my brain disagrees.

And just for the record I generally enjoy riffing on bad movies and I love blaxploitation, so I do know how to enjoy myself with shitty media.

I think having a discussion about this with you is a pretty pointless endeavour, because you've already made up your mind about them. So yes. They are very, very bad. We won't talk about the Shaggs anymore.

I think the "So bad it's good" threshold is different for everybody. For instance, some people think this is awesome, and I personally can't stand this for thirty seconds:

It's just such a hokey misuse of techniques that should only be used sparingly. A bunch of other reasons why I don't like it, too.

    Different strokes for different folks.

You could apply this to almost anything and it'd be true.

    I'm pretty opinionated :V

No, you see, superfrequency, it is a statement counterpointing the facets of commercialized musicality in the modern mass-produce-mass-consume mass market. The genius behind the shaggs is that the art (yes ART) they make on instruments comes not from talent, but rather from a mirror-effect--their instruments are mirrors, and they hold these mirrors up to the music industry to say, "mister producerman, this is what happens when you ceaselessly take any three pretty faces, and put them on stage for the paycheck." The true art of the shaggs movement is the postmodern, conunterculture and anticonsumerist okay no I can't keep this up.

basically, it's like watching a youtube video of startled cats knocking down trashcans

which can be funny or not depending on your sense of humor

Yeah, but you can pull this off now; Autotune and whatnot.

    For example:

I liked that Tangerine Dream. Apparently I have a thing for 70s electronic music. YMO, Kraftwerk, Vangelis, that kinda thing.

also you posted some Sergio Mendes!

    I like this one.

The stanley clarke album I think is best would have to be The Toys of men. But that's mostly because I ADORE the title track. I actually don't have Journey to Love.

Me too. I'm a big Mort Garson fan.

I adore Brasil '66. Lani Hall has the most gorgeous voice.

I much prefer his pre-"School Days" material. I don't know if I have a favorite but his first three are great.

EDIT: I just realized he is playing TWO BASSLINES SIMULTANEOUSLY

Wait nevermind that's Jan Hammer on a moog I am retarded

Ooooooh I need to get me some of that. I only have 3 of his CDs, Toys of Men, School Days, and If This Bass Could Talk. (could only talk? I forget.) I... wasn't too impressed with School days honestly, and I thought it was his most famous?

    These guys are nucking futs.

Part 2. It gets epic right before part 2.

Eh. It didn't have the charm and style that makes me love his first three records and early Return To Forever. Aside from being commercially successful due to sounding more commercial, I thought the songwriting took a huge nosedive. None of the songs begged me to listen a second time. Sold it.

    Yeah I guess so.

The reason I asked is because I just came across a really interesting album, but I can't find any tracks from it on youtube. It's called The Iridium Controversy, by the band Birdsongs of the Mesozoic. (geez, that's a mouthful)

These guys are absolutely insane. Being a prog fan, I've heard plenty of bands bill themselves and groundbreaking and unique, but most of them just crib ideas from classic 70s stuff. But these guys are definitely one of a kind. The best way I can describe them is, to steal a quote from a much more talented reviewer, "The world's hardest-rocking chamber music quartet". They play electric instruments, but their songwriting is lot more influenced by modern classical music then rock. Oh yeah, and they use a huge variety of instruments - not just guitars and keyboards, but also sax, flute and even drum machine and sequenced synth parts.

If all this sounds like the setup for a terribly pretentious album, you're in for a surprise. Despite their eclectic style, most of their stuff on The Iridium Controversy is quite listenable. There's a very strong rhythmic drive in their music, which keeps things moving even when the songs get really complex. There are a handful of crappy songs, but overall, I was pleasantly surprised by enjoyable this stuff is. I know pretty much nothing about classical, but you don't really have to in order to appreciate the album.

VERDICT: If you're looking for something really different, give these guys a try. I was skeptical at first, but they've really won me over. (I haven't heard much from their earlier albums, though - apparently they're more punk-influenced)
