“Many, many years ago, we weren't as developed as we are now. We didn't have that much of an understanding of the world, and we could only make some guesses about how things worked. Some of us discovered ancient structures, and eventually people figured out how to imbue ARTEFACTS with them. However, there was one thing nobody figured out.â€
“In every ancient structure, there were ENGRAVINGS, and on those, a particular emblem. When our explorers found them, they made nothing of it. There were some patterns. In every natural copy of the emblem, one side faces NORTH and the other side faces SOUTH, no exceptions. It coincides with our mythology, which says that this world was born in between light and darkness. Presumably, the south half represents light, while the north half represents darkness, and the PIXEL, EYE, and SPEAKER in the middle represent us as a civilization. The ARTEFACTS around the emblem show that both light and darkness are balanced, or so the leading interpretation states. That's where we came to a dead end. Nobody could figure out what the things on the edges mean (other than the ARTEFACTS). Nobody could figure out why the symbols for light and darkness appear that way, and what the circles and lines mean.â€
“That is, until a certain someone became determined to figure it all out. He was a SCHOLAR, like me, and was well-known for being flexible and considering every argument before proceeding. He interpreted the emblem literally, and thought that by travelling far NORTH or SOUTH, he would find a representation of darkness and light, respectively. So, he prepared himself with plenty of resources, bid everyone goodbye, and travelled NORTH, fueled by curiosity.
“He returned, contrary to many expectations. In fact, he returned absolutely jovial. It was as if he found some kind of treasure up NORTH. He said it was better than treasure. He said it was something that opened the mind, something that can only be experienced, not told. Eager to see what he was talking about, others followed him as he travelled NORTH for the second time.
“When he came back, he was met with a celebration. Everyone was ecstatic, hoping to follow in a third journey and see what had him so excited. He came back alone. He was no longer jovial, no longer eager to show everyone what he saw. He was scared, scarred, and absolutely silent. People asked what happened to the others, and he did not answer. Soon, he was excluded from society, convicted of permanent murder. He travelled NORTH for a final time, alone, and never came back. Over time, his name was forgotten, and he was simply known as the NORTHERNER.
“Years later, as the population grew, people became curious of this legend. Despite warnings, they too travelled NORTH, fueled too by curiosity and repeating history. Some of them even travelled SOUTH. And yet, despite all expectations, most of them came back. Their reactions were mixed. Most of them came back disappointed and frustrated, and when asked about what happened, they supposedly couldn't remember a thing. Others came back content and even satisfied, but again seemed to forget everything—our MAYOR was one of these, actually. And, of course, there were the unlucky few who never came back at all. In fact, none of the ones who travelled SOUTH came back, so people stopped doing that.â€
“As for me, I'm curious, but I don't want to repeat that path. I feel that there is more to be discovered closer to home--that's why I'm in the library of the PALACE. Speaking of which, I've got to get back to my research. Take care!â€
