    Table Games: General

I haven't seen any topics over the general table games. We're not talking Sorry, or any stuff like that... I'm talking about Dungeons and Dragons, Star Wars, and other cool games. Does anyone play them? What's your favorite? Got an awesome character? Neat stories?

Iunno. Just seemed like a good idea.

Well, to start things off, I play 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, I used to run a Star Wars game, and ... yeah. I usually play a badass Wizard/Mage named Ickellent Fortiunato.
Anyone else ever hear of 2nd Edition advanced games still being played? I would really like to know if anyone still even plays that...
Otherwise, I know all the rage today is 3.5 and 4... which are blah to me. Not as imaginative or interesting.

Gonna have to disagree with you there! The whole point of tabletop games is that they're as imaginative and interesting as your group is willing to make them.

I play 3.5 myself, as DM. I'd love to roll up a character myself sometime but, frankly, when it comes to DMing I am the best there is. Among my group of five people, at least. That and my 2.5 year campaign still isn't over. But it's getting there!

Lately I've been wanting to play some 4e though. We ran a few games of it when it came out, but I didn't want to DM it and, as I said, I'm the best there is, so the other campaigns that started died in two sessions.

I've also run Call of Cthulhu and played Mutants & Masterminds, both are great. Right now one of my friends is running a game called Primetime Adventures wherein you work with the group to have an adventure, as normal, but in the framework of a television series.

Yeah, I guess a game is as good as the DM makes it, you got me there.
I just don't like how you have to get all the miniatures, and maps, and everything now. I like hand drawing, and explaining things as they go along. With star wars, that was a little more difficult, but we still managed.

I wish my friends were as nerdy as me. We made up our own RPG once, but everyone else got bored after an hour or so and wanted to do something else.

I know what you're saying. My brother and I used to make giant maps and pretend we were in the Dragon ball Z universe. It was square based, because we were like, 10.
Otherwise I'm thinking of making a 2nd Ed Adv mod for Avatar: The Last Airbender.
    Anyone think that'd work out?

You hardly have to use their miniatures and maps. Me and my friends have played 3.5 and we used legos. I've played twice, and now we're trying out Dark Heresy.

Our DM is pretty much the only one willing to do it, 3 of the 7 of us are pretty committed to derailing us as much as possible, and the rest of use are pretty lax about things too. And our DM kinda dislikes fantasy, and this is his first time DMing, so our first 2 games were horribly generic. So far Dark Heresy is much better, but I think that's mostly because of his preferences.

I used to play Star Wars with some friends of mine. We had a really good GM, but eventually he got too busy with real life to hang out with us regularly, and the group just kinda fell apart :/

I have the sourcebooks for Rifts and Exalted, two RPGs that I really wanna try. Unfortunately I don't really have a good group to play them with anymore...

Haha, that reminds me, a few years ago, me and my friends made up an elaborate RPG with Legos I still have a copy of the rules somewhere - they were pretty long.

Yeah, when I was GM'ing my game I got busy with school, and plays, so I couldn't really run it anymore. I feel bad, because I left my group on a cliff hanger, being chased down by a Sith Lord because they blew the shit out of his ship.

    They also took my dead NPC's lightsaber. ; - ;

My buddy topped that in his Mutants & Masterminds game.

Two characters, including mine, had been gassed and abducted by a group of supervillains, all of whom we've encountered at least once before, and one of whom was my personal arch-nemesis. The other two characters managed to track us down and burst into the room just as the villains were finishing their various monologues, which was my character's cue to destroy our cell since his other arch-nemesis is architecture.

The battle started off poorly, with me wasting my hard-to-use superattack in round one then getting mindscrewed into running away. The rest of the party is nowhere near as combat-focused as my character, so that four against three battle was a stalemate for a long time. Eventually my character snapped out of it, ran back, and proceeded to knock out exactly one villain per round until only his arch-nemesis remained. The GM used every single one of the bad guy's tricks to keep him conscious, at which point he invoked the rule of "No! This cannot be! You haven't seen the last of me, meddling do-gooders!" and had the villain teleport away. While the same two characters who originally got abducted were holding on to him, leaving the other two to round up the unconscious villains and wonder where the hell they'd have to track us to next.

At which point the session ended.

At which point the campaign ended.

We might better go back to it later.

I really like Warmachine. I'm surprised you've not heard of it, guys!

Dungeons and Dragons is a great game, but I don't know if I like 4E so much. It's a good introduction to the series. 3.5 is the shining jewel on the DnD crown, but try playing through a 2 or 1 campaign sometime. They're great fun, lots more room for creativity in my opinion.

I would totally play Warmachine if not for the fact that I invested in Warhammer 40k already, which means that I am now married to my space ork boyz and their trukk.

I really want to try some 1e at some point, for the simplicity.

I'd like to get into miniature games except I know they'd just end up being display pieces. I do have a bunch of D&D minis that I use for combat in my game, but I pretty much haven't touched the miniatures skirmish rules since I picked up my first set. Also I ran out of money. Also I think they stopped making them?

What I'd prefer to do now is eventually start sculpting my own minis, so I won't have to say things like "the zombies represent the bug-people and this spider is a triceratops" anymore. At least I don't have to use pennies and dice though.

I... kind of play. By which I mean I have about 500 points worth of models, most of which are unpainted, and I haven't painted anything in probably close to a year. I got real heavy into things in 2008, but then various scheduling conflicts and monetary concerns killed it all dead. Still want to finish painting what I have, including my Falcon tank.

I could never get into miniatures...

Painting them was fun, but playing the games... Not so much.

    I'm more of a card game/RPG guy.

I'm gonna make a long shot here. Does anyone play Blood Bowl?

    Re: Table Games: General

I've seen it played, but it never caught my attention...

However, I thought the concept was cool.

Ogres killing people for a football was an interesting concept.

i play d+d 4e and i pretty much love it.

unfortunately our campaigns usually break before they finish due to LIFE.

i don't enjoy 3.5 because i guess CASUAL GAMER??? kill me now
and i don't like having to do the fucking math on everything, also dying from a rat and stuff like that.

4e haters give me the biggest headache
    this is stupid

4E was fun because it didn't take a fucking month to set up a game...

If you're being literal, yeah, I've seen that. It's pretty much always the DM's fault though, announcing a game looong before they're ready to actually run a session. As for character creation, it gets a lot faster once you know what you're doing and not having to have someone hold your hand through it.

And even if you're not being literal, I do understand the sentiment. That's why I want one of my friends to run 4e, since they can hopefully set aside the ten minutes it takes to set up a game.
