Was phpBB worse than I thought? Did it really store passwords unencrypted?
No it didn't.

What we can do, is just multiquote the nested quotes, and then nest them ourselves like I did.
So, basically multiqoute all the peeps.
Then drag the quotes into each other.
Takes longer, but the option is there.
Hey, so this is actually Scarfington. I can't log in. Apparently I forgot my password. It happens. The thing is though, when I tell it to send me that email that will help me get around it, it doesn't do anything. I've gone through the process several times now, and the forum SAYS it sent it, but I got to my email and there is nothing there. My account still exists, but I can't get into it and this makes me really sad.
You did check all your email folders, right? A lot of peoples' emails from here are ending up in Spam for some reason.

Yes, that is the work-around that I already thought of. I raised this because I found that place where it doesn't work and manually re-creating the quoted text is particularly tedious.
On a whim I clicked that little blue button on the forum mainpage that should lead me directly to Andrew's last post in the Suggestion Box forum in the Hivebent topic.
Instead it led me here. The link that comes up when I click that button is here, which although it appears to be the right link, it keeps sending me back to that completely unrelated post.
Now I love me some Vriska Serket but I have no idea why it led me here. I suppose it's not a big deal though, and it's probably something going wrong on my end. Weird though!
That's weird. It might be that the most recent post in there was deleted and it screwed it figuring out the actual number for the last post before it, since it was a post from the old software.
It was ·Azu -- but I only took that because "Azu" was taken.
Except, it wasn't actually taken. It was dormant for over a month after I sent an email (that was never answered!) to Andrew about it, and then for months after that.
"Azu" wasn't on the member list when I tried joining, but it wouldn't let me take the name anyway. Over in IRC myself and a bunch of people determined that somebody had probably just never responded to a verification email. You'll note that they have no posts, no comments, no anything.
I want the name, but if I can't have it, the bullet point's fine with me.
Still totally awkward, still would be fine with ·Azu -- that is, if nobody believes me on the subject of "azu" never having actually registered.
....actually, here's an IRC log.
Session Start: Wed Jan 27 00:00:01 2010
Session Ident: #pesterchum
[00:08:07] * Arc|away is now known as Archaemic
[00:10:49] Azu: uh
[00:10:51] Azu: hm
[00:11:04] Azu: somebody tell me about the user Azu on the forum
[00:11:14] Azu: because I cannot remember whether I did it or not
[00:11:41] Azu: any posts? signup date? perhaps just give me a screenshot of the profile page?
[00:13:14] Archaemic: There is no user Azu on the forums
[00:13:18] Archaemic: I just checked
[00:13:21] Azu: ...odd
[00:13:25] Azu: it won't let me use the name
[00:13:34] Archaemic: Why not?
[00:13:36] Archaemic: What's it say?
[00:13:41] Azu: does "between 3 and 20 characters" actually mean above three
[00:13:54] Archaemic: No, there's a user Avi
[00:14:00] Archaemic: And tl9 is tl9
[00:14:09] Azu: well, I'll try again
[00:14:23] Dritz: there's an Ayo nearby where Azu would be
[00:14:39] Dritz: (just went to members list, start with A, alphabetical order, last page.)
[00:14:59] Archaemic: It goes straight from AZNsupermarket to B-man
[00:15:03] Azu: The username you entered is already in use, please select an alternative.
[00:15:05] Archaemic: No Azu
[00:15:07] Archaemic: Strange
[00:15:22] Dritz: definitely not seeing an Azu, yeah.
[00:15:32] Dritz: maybe it was never verified?
[00:15:38] Archaemic: Could be
[00:15:40] Dritz: is there a verification process required?
[00:15:45] Archaemic: I don't remember
[00:15:59] Azu: well there is a "resend verification email" option
[00:16:05] Dritz: ah
[00:16:06] Archaemic: Yes
[00:16:06] Dritz: try that
[00:16:12] Archaemic: There is a verification process
[00:16:19] Azu: but it was unable to find the name+email combination I provided
[00:16:23] Dritz: hm.
[00:16:55] Archaemic: Maybe someone else did take it, but it never got verified
[00:17:08] Archaemic: Maybe email Andrew or something
[00:17:13] Dritz: yeah, i was just thinking
[00:17:21] Dritz: email whoever does the technical work for the site and forums
[00:17:31] Archaemic: I think Andrew does
[00:17:40] Dritz: email him then
[00:17:41] Archaemic: Also the board email address IS andrewhussie@gmail.com
[00:17:57] Dritz: he's a pretty cool guy, responded to my request to try and get on archivebinge like half an hour after I sent it :p
[00:18:11] Dritz: which reminds me, I wonder if DMM ever updated it
[00:18:18] Dritz: because he said it'd be a few days but then it never happened
[00:18:32] Dritz: yeeep
[00:18:44] Dritz: "new comics added in 7 days" hasn't changed since that email exchange several months ago
[00:19:22] Dritz: discussion happened on 11/14/09, and archivebinge hasn't updated at all >.>
[00:20:17] Dritz: shame, too. so many people I would refer to PS/HS if they didn't look at how much there was and refuse to read it.
[00:21:39] Azu: so wait, why would I write an email
[00:21:51] Dritz: Azu: ask them to look into why you can't create an account
[00:22:07] Azu: but what if it's because somebody else was looking to use Azu
[00:22:15] * Archaemic looks at his Backloggery
[00:22:17] Archaemic: hmm
[00:22:29] Archaemic: Azu: if the account wasn't verified, it's unlikely that they intend to actually use it
[00:22:31] Azu: I can't exactly ask "hey so since this guy didn't actually make his account, can I have the username?"
[00:22:39] Archaemic: especially if it hasn't been verified for quite a long time
[00:22:44] Dritz: you can ask "why can't I make this account, there's no user by this name, what's up here?"
[00:22:58] Archaemic: Getting the email is quick, and all you have to do is click a link
[00:22:58] Dritz: don't even bring up that we think it might be unverified, taht's just a hypothesis
[00:23:27] Dritz: and if someone registered it a couple days ago, well, that's probably what you'll be told. otherwise, you'll get your account soon
[00:24:29] Archaemic: yes, that
[00:24:45] Dritz: anyway it's getting way too fucking late
[00:24:48] Dritz: I'm gonna go to sleep
[00:24:56] Archaemic: I should do that too
[00:25:35] Azu: "Hey, trying to use the name Azu -- which I do in a lot of places! -- on the forums, but it appeared to be taken. But then several people with accounts told me that there's no player named Azu on the forums! And I'm pretty sure it wasn't me, as I would've used this email to register it. What's going on?"
[00:26:37] Archaemic: ....player?
[00:26:53] Archaemic: you mean user?
[00:27:12] Azu: ..yes.
[00:27:24] * Azu changes
[00:27:39] Azu: anything (beyond that) wrong with the wording?
[00:27:54] Azu: and should I really send this to andrewhussie@gmail
[00:27:58] Archaemic: "What's going on?" feels a bit demanding
[00:28:06] Archaemic: try "Do you know what's going on?"
[00:28:50] Archaemic: I'd also personally say "Hey, I'm trying" instead of "Hey, trying"
[00:28:51] Azu: "Any idea what's happening there?"
[00:29:03] Archaemic: Also works
[00:29:10] Archaemic: And yes, andrewhussie@gmail.com
[00:29:23] Archaemic: That's the email he has listed in multiple places on the site
[00:29:44] Archaemic: Like, say, the contact link on the main page
[00:30:42] Dritz: it's the one i sent the archivebinge thing to, and like i said, got a response in like half an hour
(ignore emotes in timestamps)
That conversation took place in late January of this year, the day before I gave up and registered with a slightly different name. "azu", presumably, sent in a registration attempt in April of 2009. and was apparently not on the member list for the following nine months.
I think the account's only there NOW as part of some ridiculous facet of the forums moving, and whoever the guy is (hell, it could be me and I just forgot the info I put in) clearly hasn't done anything here, and is just wasting space on a username that I'd be making more of a use of.
AZU is complaining in a tldr fashion! What will you do?
Okay, so the [code] tage is supposed to be used to show other people BBC Code right?
Well look at this
Code:
What should just be the [IMG] tag, the link and the end [IMG] tag is the image inside the [code] box.
And I am not entirely positive that that is supposed to happen.
Let's see if it acually does anythign now.
Code:
BOOM BOOM
IT DOESN'T!
EXTENSIVE EXPERIMENTS BELOW
Code:
:3 :bonk: :duhjohn: :cal:
It disables smileys
not spoilers
not strike
Not links
Not any type of text formmatting
not videos
Not quotes
So, with testing all of the features outside of advanced, I have found that [code] only removes smileys.

Reason: EXPERIMENTS LOTS OF EXPERIMENTS
Maybe if you can make the string for space-colon-three-space " " instead of colon-three? That will get rid of the ** problems.
How did you do that? Every time in which you typed, keeping in mind that I've added spaces which would need to be taken out, ': 3' it came up as the very text that you typed instead of the emote for me and yet, as I look at your quote, you still only typed ': 3' without any extra. However, it seems as if the previously pure-text smiley has turned to the smiley when I quote it. I imagine this is some setting.
Edit: Which is a shame as I imagine the setting turns off all emotes or something like that. I just want to be able to type : 3 without it turning into the emote.

on the last two pages of the fanventures forum, there is a bunch of threads that are also in the completed subforum. all of those threads are shown to have happened in 1970.
these forums haven't been around THAT long have they?

HTML Code:
[B][U][I][FONT="Lucida Console"][SIZE="5"][COLOR="Orange"]The html tag seems to do what you want[/COLOR][/SIZE][/FONT][/I][/U][/B]
It appears that at some point data that was already Unicode was converted to Unicode again, resulting in weird "Double Unicoded Character Shenanigans" (to borrow a popular meme here). Cases in point from this topic: Azu's name already contained a Unicode character (the bullet). Each byte in the original Unicode character was turned into a two byte Unicode sequence. Same thing happened with the accented characters.
To answer the post above me, are you sure you're not specifying a cut off date? Also, searches in general act weird. They only initially show 100 results. As you view the last couple pages of results, it will continue to provide additional results. (I guess this is to lessen the server load).
Speaking of that, I'm still getting server busy errors. Is this due to an arbitrarily too small value for max server/database connections or is the server really too busy?
