Thread: NEPETAQUEST 2011: Incredibly serious business.

Re: NEPETAQUEST 2011: Incredibly serious business.

So the latest track I made was having problems with the bass when I converted it to any sort of format besides midi. So until then...have a .midi:
    http://midishrine.com/midi/39392.mid

I think this sounds either like a boss song or a "we have to get out of here! the dungeon is crumbling!" song.

About those bells, yeah, something's wrong with them. They're coming in too early, and I think it's more weird format problems. They sound perfect in midi.

    Here's the .midi of Exploration:
    http://midishrine.com/midi/39391.mid

You know, since this is for a game, we should probably all start out in .midi unless you absolutely have to use another format.

The more I listen to it, the more the bells sound off to me again. Aaaaaarrrrrrggghhhhhhhhhh

Wait, so is that Ridley's theme that you're using there?

Hmmm...does it really sound like that? I thought it sounded more like something out of FF7 than anything.

It's a joke based on the fact that you said it was "either a boss song or a "we have to get out of here, the dungeon is crumbling!" song".

Because, you know, Ridley's theme is exactly that in the Metroid series.

Oh. Sorry, I misinterpreted. Though the more I listen to it, the more it sounds like Ridley's theme.

I haven't had the chance to listen to it yet (have to go to bed soon), but I'll listen to it tomorrow. Plus, I'll start work on my own contributions. Leave some stuff for me, you work so fast that I might not be able to catch up!

God damn, it's going to take me a while to think of a theme.

Re: NEPETAQUEST 2011: Incredibly serious business.

I've been giving some thought to items. I'm thinking they could be categorized thusly:

    Party Items:
Your standard-issue healing etc. items that give beneficial effects to party members. This is pretty obvious! Moving right along.

    Battle Items:
I believe we were discussing having only items cause status problems. Those would fall into this category. Basically, anything in here is to only be used in battle to do harm to your opponents.

    Weapon Improvements:
Back when I was pushing for the SGRUB plot, I considered the possibility that the different weapons the party gets during SGRUB could effect the characters' regular attacks. Since we're not going that route, I started thinking about ways to do that here. The result is this category. This kind of item could be initially applied either in battle or out. What it basically does once applied is add a temporary effect to the character's regular attack. Like lathering poison on a blade, for example.

    Overworld Items:
A random category that occurred to me when I asked myself why the other items only relate to battle. I suppose they'd affect the walk around world in some way, although I'm not sure how. Something like torches/lights making it easier to see? I dunno.

What do you guys think? Good? Bad? Stupid? Too difficult to program? XD

So I tried to make a battle theme (again) and ended up making something that would fit Nepeta's hive. Sorry if it seems like I'm being overzealous, I just really enjoy making music. I think this track is reminiscent of Paper Mario.

p.s. i'm also being a hypocrite here by not uploading it in .midi but the kazoo sounds do not translate to .midi at all

Why on earth would we object to you giving us a lot of music? Quite apart from us needing it, it's also nice to listen to.

Also, you're absolutely right about it being terrible for battle but perfect for Nepeta's Hive. O_O

Can I still crosspost my pixelart here? Let me know if you'd prefer I not do so.

Re: NEPETAQUEST 2011: Incredibly serious business.

I'll be on a plane for a good bit of tomorrow, so I uploaded what I have to http://b.armory.com/~geekthras/nepetaquest/nepquest.jar - After loading, press b to go to the battle module and f to the field module, q to go back to the 'menu mode'. I can't speak for the field module, but for the battle module:
    - The music should stop
    - There should be two Nepeta sprites in the bottom left corner, one walking, one staying still
    - Upon pressing 'w', the one that is walking should swap. This is basically supposed to represent switching who is selected in battle.

It might not look like much on my end, but believe me, there's 200+ lines of code down to make all that happen in a way that's extensible. I tend to design from the ground up, set up all the abstract shit before I make it look like anything.

edit: ocpmovie, can you post links to all of those edits you've done? It would be kinda nice to link them in the OP, if Frost is willing.

    link is broken. :-C

Edit: Also, although I did laugh and do love your previous edits as well, I don't think those edit are necessarily relevant here anymore since this thread is dedicated to the creation of the actual game, as opposed to the previous thread's original "lol what if there was a real NEPETAQUEST 2011 LOL" purpose.

Okay. I'm still intending these as a way to throw some ideas out there. Mostly for LOLs though. And to create believable art in the actual HomestuckBound art resolution.

There have been some vague rumblings about a possible future Kanayastlevania project, but as of now it is only an in-joke inspired by an in-joke.

Re: NEPETAQUEST 2011: Incredibly serious business.

Woops. Should be fixed now! I wasn't sure if this was still the place for the edits, so I just thought I'd suggest it, especially since if I was looking for them I don't know where else I'd look. Also in the intervening time I was struck with inspiration for a battle theme. It's now 4:30 am and I need to be up by like 9:30 so I just wrote down the extremely simple thing I came up with but this seems like the only thing so far remotely approaching a battle theme so I thought I'd throw it out there.

Geez, we are just swimming in music here. When can people get started on artificating, anyway? Is there any reason not to start doing backgrounds and stuff now? I mean, I can see holding off on spriting and stuff, but... we're gonna need a lot of art, guys!
