I think 'horrified' would be a better word than upset, I mean, it is one thing to hate someone, but find out that she is/was worse than you could even begin to imagine... and she is her mother, I can't believe that she would not be at least a little worried about becoming like her when she grow up.

So definitely fully within a couple miles?

I'd say he could see a sizable chunk of the colony as it is during Shula's 18th year, which is about as described earlier.

I'd imagine so... he refuses to say the exact range of his 'always on' clairvoyance, because he's afraid of freaking people out, but it's right around 3-4 miles.

"Mister Vantas", Dylan greeted as he walked into the relevant part of Hivestem Alpha. "Is Shula home?"

"Yeah kid, but I don't think you should go upstairs right now..."

"And why's that?"

Karkat groaned lightly. "She's planning a... slumber party for today. Fuck if I know what the big deal about it is but it seems to involve a lot of girls giggling among eachother."

"I'll just knock and see if it's okay."

Karkat shrugged and went back to his playtesting. "Your funeral, kid."

"I sstill don't ssee why I agreed to come along with you girlss", the little spider girl complained. "I mean, you're like, three yearss older than meeee."

"And what about it? You're old enough by now to appreciate teh atmosphere of a well-executed slumbah party, and Carmen's only two years olda'n you."

"I'll admit, that'ss a reasonable point."

Tarani yawned.

"Oh yeah, you're usually up in the day aren't you?" Carmen noticed. "Here, this'll keep you awake for a good while."

She took out a couple of bottles of Faygo in several flavors and handed over a yellow one.

"That's some nice sleepwear by teh way, Ran. It doesn't really go that well with your hair all bunned up though."

"Oh, that'ss right. I forgot about that", Tarani admitted and pulled out the two sticks that kept her bun in place. Carmen chugged half a bottle of blue Faygo like it was nothing.

There was a knock on the door.

"Who is iiit?"

"It's Dylaaan" came the muffled reply from behind the door. The first thing Dylan could make out was giggles, exactly like Karkat had predicted. It was a little unsettling, but that was actually a good thing since Dylan needed to practice being cool in unsettling circumstances anyway. "Is it safe to come in?"

"Suuure Dyllweed! h3h3h3h3h"

As Dylan carefully opened the door Shula took off her pajama top, to Carmen's entertainment and Tarani's surprise.

"Trust me on this one, girls", Shula whispered.

Dylan's reaction when he looked into the room was just about what Shula was aiming for. He sputtered something that sorta-kinda sounded like "put something on for fuck's sake" and was quite definately not cool. Carmen was smothering her laughter in a convenient pillow and even Tarani was, by now, highly entertained. While Dylan stumbled around trying to turn away from it all, Shula put her top back on, a toothy grin near-permanently plastered on her face.

Meanwhile, one block over, Gabriel Zahhak went pale in shock.

"Okay", Shula said between snorty giggles, "it's really safe now."

Dylan carefully turned back around.

"You're just in time too, cos I was just about to suggest a friendly game. Who's up for Truth or Dare?"

"How iss that played?" asked Tarani.

"Oooh riiight, you've never done this before, haven't you?"

Dylan made his way through the assorted crap on the floor and found a spot to sit.

"Basically, I ask one of you if you want a truth or a dare. If you say truth, I ask a question that you must answer truthfully. If you say dare, I state something for you to do. Then you ask another player. Got it?"

"I ssee. And you go firsst why?"

"I'm teh oldest one here, duuuh."

Carmen took out a fresh bottle and passed it to Dylan.

"Carmen", Shula announced, "truth or dare?"

"...Truth!"

"Have you ever even considered being with a guy instead of me?"

"...can't say I have", Carmen admitted. "You're cuddlier than most guys I've seen."

Tarani wondered exactly how many guys she meant.

"Sso, it'ss your turn, then?"

"I guess it is... Strider, truth or dare?"

Dylan considered his options for a moment. His life so far went against his mission, being decidedly un-cool, whereas not stepping down from a challenge... "Dare!"

"I hadn't expected that. Lemme think... I dare you to kiss Shu."

Was that it? Dylan thought to himself. He had done much worse less than two months earlier! With a curt "kay" he got up, walked over to Shula, picked her up from the floor and found her kissing him first WTF?!

"nice try dy11w33d but your ass is min3"

Dylan shrugged and went back to his spot. "Shula. Truth or dare?"

"Truth."

"Okay. When did your friendship with Carmen go tits up like that?"

"When I was sixteen. It was de-"

"Stop trolling the poor guy, Shu!" Carmen interrupted with a purple flush on her face.

"Ran," Shula announced after collecting herself. "Truth or dare?"

Tarani looked adequatly apprehensive, but still more relaxed than Dylan could hope to be. Carmen wondered if it was because Tarani was a girl among girls or because Dylan was just a failure.
