T hope that T'm not betng tntrustve, but T have been wondertng how new Sgrub games start. Are they organtzed, or do they just happen? They all look so tnteresttng! T hope that T am not betng too tmpattent. Or tmprudent.

I’m like, amazed at how many trolls people are able to create. There are like tons of them and they’re all so cool. And there are some pretty cool powers too. I was wondering, how do you make them so cool? I am interested in making one, and the only idea I have been able to scrounge together seems far too Marty-stu for my liking.

And I’m not sure it would be interesting, or even possible for that matter.

I'm not a troll-making expert, but all I did was throw something I thought was interesting together and see what happened. There's that random Land/Title generator you can use if you want random ideas. http://miff.furopolis.org/mspa/landgen/# I don't get the feelin' that anyone's gonna be harsh on you.

I think you start with the cool powers, it comes off a lot more Marty-Sue/godmode-based than it does if you start with a character concept and then give the character the resources they need to meet it... trolls tend to need all the advantages they can get just to survive!

I think it's almost hard to make a boring troll! It's such a wacky exciting setting.

What's the idea you have, maybe we can help you flesh it out.

Okay so, I'll post my idea. I just got it today so... it's not that long... I hope.

I got my idea from watching one of the old Mothra movies that I have, one of my favorite Godzilla monsters. Plus I love bugs, they’re awesome.

Anyways my idea was that he had an unusual psychic ability or quality, his blood “sings” to creatures and trolls that are psionically inclined. If they tried to read his mind or something instead of hearing thoughts they’d find his mind is blocked, surrounded by a shielding barricade of music. This isn’t something that he has any control over, it just happens naturally.

It is this unusual melody that attracted his lusus; which will be either a moth or something else. I kinda want it to be a male Mother Grub… A Father Grub? I don’t know if such a thing would exist but I like the idea of them existing; they’d be necessary for the Mother Grubs right?

His echeladder would be filled with a bunch of caterpillar/cocoon/moth/butterfly puns and stuff. I’d have to resist inserting a Papillion Mask joke somewhere.

Personality wise he’d be pretty stable for a troll. Sure he’d be depressing to be around and sees the glass half full type of guy. But he just wouldn’t suddenly flip his lid and start killing people. Not sure about blood color, or typing quirk. To be honest, I don’t know what would be unique with so many trolls about. (I was thinking~that~his~words~have~a~tendancy~to~wriggle ~across~the~page,~like~a~grub. But someone has already taken that quirk.)

But then I realized that this might not be any good and then grew nervous. And Marty-sue like. I’ll go cower in fear now.

My first thought is that you hardly need to worry about the psionic shield thing, because I don't know how much it's even going to come up! I'd focus on the idea of a giant moth lusus, which is darn cool... maybe something like a less neutered version of Tinkerbull?

There are certain stereotypes about personality and blood-type, and you can either go against the grain or stick with them, but either way you're in a dialogue with them, so I think you probably want to think about the personality as you develop that. Stable and down-to-earth sounds like a low level, red or brown... maybe, going back to the Tinkerbull thing, sort of a more 'masculine' version of Tavros as well, a brawny farmboy type?

Moths eat clothes... I have no idea what to do with that, but maybe it factors in somehow. And they're fertilizers, like less glamorous butterflies... fits with the Father Grub idea. I imagine the Father Grubs would be a lot more populous than the Mother Grubs, that's how bugs usually do it. And die after they mate. So sort of Kanaya + Tavros?

Once you get a sense of his personality, you can start layering in diverse interests, which can give the character a lot of flavor. And think about how he survives... can a giant moth hunt? Does he ranch dangerous beasts? Or grow crops? A veggie troll?

Well, that's how I'd develop it.... as an object lesson at least.
