Then tell the cashier you were pranking them and ask for a commemorative photo.
Alternatively, excuse yourself and go buy some windex, then take a picture of it with the receipt taped to it.

This is pretty much the one time that I've ever regretted having so many pairs of socks, lost socks, and knee-highs all at the same time. But hey, I got the picture!

I really hate my knee-high socks now though. They always make me lose feeling in my legs. >-<

I blame the cats for the fact that it looks semi-fashionable. After all, nobody can pass up socks that have little black cats on them, especially when said cats are wearing purple hats!
It isn't all that painful when the socks are on your feet. It just feels like your feet aren't there for a while after you take them off. Getting all of them on and off your feet kind of hurts though.
