Captchalogue has a ton of really excellent fics, and on the fill lists they're sorted by shippy/non-shippy for ease of access. My favorite is Shades of Grey, but I double checked and it's tagged Rose/Dave even though it's not very shippy. There is also an excellent Doc Scratch POV that I can't seem to locate right now. I checked my personal recs list, but the stuff on it is mostly things I wouldn't recommend to a novice.

ETA: Currently there are exactly 314 Homestuck fics on AO3 tagged gen. I just really felt like that needed pointing out.

So I was taking the AP English Literature test the other day, and while working through the multiple choice section, I came across an interesting piece of writing. I immediately recognized it as having been plagiarized from an old book of Alternian poetry I once read and quickly took note of the title and author so I could look it up when I returned home. While I was unable to locate the book I found the original poem in, I luckily managed to remember most of it. I have restored it to its former glory here for your reading pleasure.

DEAR FANFIC THREADERS:

I am on a quest to sell someone on fanfic. I have already given him a few req's, but I require... moar.

Things:

- Not pairing-centric in any way, shape, or form. Keep it gen.
- Excellent writing style = a must. The prose has to *sing*
- No crossovers yet (I'll save that for later?)
- Bonus points for either 1. HUMOR or 2. Really interesting explorations of character/canon concepts. Also 3. Dualscar / other ancestor shenanigans (No Karkancestor plz, there's 9 billion fics of him)

So yeah, this is Aladdin, but taking place on Alternia with the characters we know from there. This is technically an AU in which there was no SGRUB and that they don't have ancestors living a long time before they do. So, it's a bit more like humans. I mean, it would have been difficult to put adults in this otherwise. Also, some of the trolls we know are parents of other trolls.

In this first chapter you'll get a backstory on how the city came to be, and you'll get to know who is playing the narrator. Also, you get hints on who the Genie will be and who will be playing the Sultan. Also, it should be painfully obvious by the title who will be playing Aladdin.

Chapter 1: Alternian Nights

One night, an especially hot night, the female troll named Nepeta was travelling through the open desert. She was not alone; she was riding on her lusus Pounce de Leon. She’ll tell you where she came from…

“Oh I come from a land, from a faraway place, where the Cavalreapurrs roam.” Nepeta sang, speaking in a cute cat like tone.

“Where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face. It's barbaric, but hey, it's home!” Nepeta sang the first part in a mysterious (but cute) way and the last part normally, like she said nothing special the first time.

In the meantime, a lot of wind came blowing, almost pushing her off her lusus. But she hang on to Pounce’s ears and her companion slowly went ahead.

“When the wind's from the east, and the sun's from the west, and the sand in the glass is right… Come on down,” Nepeta crossed the last part of her trip to the city she was heading for. She was very close now…

“Stop on by,” Nepeta did a gesture for us to join her with a big smile, “Hop a dragon and fly! To another Alternian night!!!”

The cat troll had just crossed the last hill and was now at the beginning of the city. This city was named Alternia City. This city was completely different from all the others.

Around 15 sweeps ago, all kind of trolls lived away from each other and killed almost everyone they crossed; they had been doing this for centuries of sweeps! But then this all changed when a new empress came. She was much nicer than any of her ancestors and changed all of this. She prohibited trolls from culling each other and advised them to go live with trolls of other parts of the hemospectrum.

After creating this rule, she created a new city named Alternia City. All kind of trolls were allowed to live here and live in harmony. All would be threaten the same, with normal hives like common bloods had. She would live in the palace and watch over all the activities across the world, but especially in this city. This city is the place where this story takes place…

OH, I had almost forgotten that Nepeta was still singing to us. Sorry Nepeta!

“It’s alright mister narrator!” Nepeta giggled, “I’ll just go on.”

Phew, I’m glad that you feel like that. And I should stop talking like this, I don’t want to damage my fourth wall after all.

So, Nepeta just continued singing.

“Alternian nights! Like Alternian days! More often than not, are hotter than hot! In a lot of good ways!” Nepeta sang this part with a lot of passion, while going through the city and winking at us at the last thing she said.

And finally, she arrived at the place where she’d stop for the rest of the night. It would become day soon after all, and she didn’t want to stay out while the undead would come.

“Alternian nights! Neat Alternian moons! A fool off his guard, could fall and fall hard out there on the dunes…” Nepeta sang, and at the end of this sentence, Pounce collapsed on the ground.

Her lusus really needed rest, he hadn’t drunk and rested for a long time! Nepeta jumped off Pounce and petted him.

“You did a nice job, Pounce. We'll go sleeping soon!” Nepeta reassured her lusus.

She took some milk out of her Sylladex and put it in front of Pounce who began drinking it immediately.

“Here, Pounce! You deserved it. Enjoy it!” the female troll watched her lusus a bit more.

“D’aww, I keep thinking you’re very cute while you’re doing that!” Nepeta giggled, “I just can’t resist petting you!”

After that, she petted Pounce some more, who purred in response.

Nepeta suddenly noticed you, the readers.

“O-oh! I almost forgot you were there. Good evening!” Nepeta greeted and waved at the readers, “Welcome to Alternia City, the best place in the world!”

She took out a stand with a lot of ancient things on it.

“I’m here to sell some beautiful ancient stuff an archeologist found for me!” Nepeta explained before taking out a bike horn, “This is one of the things she found. And nope! It’s not a normal horn. It looks like one, but it certainly isn’t!”

Nepeta giggled.

“It’s the inside of this horn that is different from normal ones. The thing inside this changed the life of a certain grumpy person!” Nepeta giggled once more before gasping and realizing something.

“OH, do you want me to tell what happened?” Nepeta asked, tilting her head.

Yes we do Nepeta, that’s why I’m writing this.

“Okay then!” Nepeta giggled, “Get ready!”

The cat girl put up a smirk on her face and narrowed her eyes.

“Get ready for a tale that began on a night like this…” Nepeta said.
