In theory, your AU should be gimmicky and strained. In practice, I want to slap myself in the face for saying something bad about the best AU series I've ever read. Although, you might want to change one line to say that the ogre tried to "agress" Boxcars, rather than trying to "strife" him.
I'd been writing the second chapter of my story longhand at work, and when I got around to typing it properly last night, the entire second half rushed out of me. I laughed.

There's Bear it All Broken, an ongoing humanstuck AU wherein Rose Lalonde is hit by a car and the rest of the cast interacts with her in the context of the hospital as well as the past she dwells on: part 1.
We have Couture, a silly little piece of Rose/Kanaya fluff.
We also have To Weave a Tale of Her, another silly piece of Rose/Kanaya fluff done for round two of the Homestuck Shipping Olympics.
I take prompts from tumblr for Writing Wednesdays, and I compile each new chunk of work into Works from Wednesday on AO3.

“How is your moirail, Senator?” Empress Regalsea asked.
Before her in her private study was the rigid form of Senator Allmight. The Senator was a blueblooded dog of the Grand Highblood who worshipped the hemospectrum and the conflict between land and sea with a fervor displayed only by the most cognizant of subjugglators. His loyalty was absolute, and as such, the Grand Highblood frequently entrusted him with the tasks he could assign to no other. It also made him a frequent target for assassinations and attempts at persuasion by land and sea dwellers alike. They all failed. Eliminating a key figure in the Grand Highblood’s organization remained an attractive goal and the repeated failures have not dissuaded any of his enemies from making further attempts.
As a sea dweller herself, and indeed, the absolute ruler of all sea dwellers, Empress Regalsea was arguably his greatest. This would not, however, dissuade Regalsea from trying to turn him into an ally, willing or unwilling. “I understand she was considerably distressed after the rebel was executed.”
The Senator’s sunken eyes flicked to the floor for a moment before nervously returning to the Empress’. “Yes, despite my urging to reconsider her red longings, she was flushed for the lowblood trash. She took his passing quite hard.”
“Send her my apologies.” The Empress said. “I must do what I must as empress.”
“As you wish, Your Condescension.” The Senator said with a slight bow. “Was there something you wished to discuss?”
Cutting the small talk short. Interesting. It is doubtful that her beginning the conversation with discussion about his moirail went unnoted. Despite Allmight’s brute strength, he had an experienced, if not keen, political mind. “Yes. Please, sit down.”
The Senator gritted his teeth as he stepped around a chair and gingerly set himself down. He attempted to casually lay his arms on the rests but the left arm snapped off. A bead of sweat formed on his temple. “I apologize, Your Condescension. I am not suited to such delicate tasks as sitting down in chairs.”
The Empress sat down in the chair across from him and crossed her legs, covering her gray skin with the fabric of her colorful skirt. “I have many material possessions and I care nothing for them. Do not trouble yourself over it.” The Empress said. “Though please try to refrain from wrecking my furniture.” She smiled.
“Of course, Your Condescension.”
“Now,” The Empress said, grasping her hands together. “I have it on excellent authority that our neighbors to the south, the Kingdom of Umbralica, will be declaring war on us very soon. I need you to organize our military-”
“Apologies, Your Condescension,” The Senator leaned forward. “But how do you know this?”
“Oh. Simple.” The Empress said, resting a finger on her temple. “Their mother grub will be dead very soon, and we will be accused of the act.”
“Their mother grub,” The Senator stammered.
“And all their matriorbs.”
“I...” The Senator started. “Did you order this?”
The Empress lowered her hand from her face and rested it on her lap. “That is an outrageous accusation.” The Empress said without conviction. “Watch your tongue, Senator, before I remove it from your mouth for grave offenses to the throne.”
“That... that is a war crime.” The Senator said. “And to commit it against our most powerful rival is... is reckless of you! I do not understand why you would set our nation on a path to self-destruction. It appears the doubts about your leadership are legitimate.”
The Empress let the Senator stew for a moment before responding. “What is done is done.” The Empress said. “Perhaps you would like to explain the situation to the King? That the reason their country will die out in less than a hundred sweeps is because of your mad empress.” A thin smile spread across her lips.
The Senator settled into his seat, coming to terms with what the Empress just revealed. “No, that will likely prove fruitless.”
“Excellent. You understand the situation now.” The Empress said in a too cheery tone. “I want you to personally lead the defense and then counterattack against the Kingdom. Of course, as is customary, I will be there to ceremonially lead the initial assault, but you will be the one commanding our soldiers during the campaign.”
The Senator opened his mouth to speak before his words were ready. A moment later, he responded. “But the responsibility of organizing the armies traditionally falls to the Grand Highblood.”
“Hmmmmmm.” The Empress leaned to her side. “I was hoping we could leave him out of this.”
“No.” The Senator stands up. “I must inform the Grand Highblood of this treachery.”
“Sit down, please.” The Empress motioned to his chair.
“No. I will be leaving now.”
“You will sit.” The Empress ordered. She stood up from her seat and placed herself in between the Senator and the door.
The Senator stood much taller than her with shoulders almost twice as wide. The Senator could brush her aside easily, if he so chose. The Empress suspected the previous attempts to persuade the Senator failed because of his imposing physique, but if she is to succeed, to win absolute power over all trolls and not simply sea dwellers, she would have to be utterly fearless even in the face of trolls far deadlier than her.
“Please stand aside.”
“You will sit.”
The contrast between the order and the request highlighted their difference in station, a fact the Empress counted on. “You are a traitor and a sea dweller; I would have no qualms killing you, much less pushing you aside.”
“You will not deny me my bloodright. You will sit.”
Sweat dropped down the Senator’s face. The room was filling with his stench, and although it was personally disgusting to the Empress the nervousness made her glad. The Senator backed away from the Empress and returned to his seat. The other armrest snapped off as he sat.
“Tell me, what do you think of the Grand Highblood?” The Empress said as she walked in front of the Senator and crossed her arms.
“He is an excellent leader. Much greater than you.”
“Oh, no. That is not what I mean. Not at all.” The empress circled around the seated Senator. “What do you think of him personally?”
The Senator leaned away from the Empress. “I,” He starts. “I have no personal opinion of him.”
The Empress stopped in front of him. “I have heard differently.”
“You-” The Senator stammered. “You have?”
The Empress took her seat. The Senator was pathetically easy to read. His nervousness was like a faucet. “I have heard the stories about you and him. The ones where you serve him.”
“He has richer blood. It is my place to serv-”
“The ones where you submit.”
“Tha-“
“The ones where you are dominated.”
The Senator nervously gritted his teeth as sweat poured from his head.
“What do you think of the Grand Highblood, Senator?” The Empress repeated her question.
The Senator sat straight in his seat. The flow of sweat slowed slightly and he bore a look of defiance. “That is none of your concern.”
“Are you happy?”
“I am happy to serve the Grand Highblood in whatever capacity he demands of me.”
The Empress thinned her lips. “Liar.” The Empress stood up and walked the room. “Is he flushed for you?”
The Senator gazed at the floor. “No.” He answered. “I do not know.”
“The matesprit of the Grand Highblood is an estimable position. Yet, you do not embrace it.” The Empress said, turning to face the Senator. “You are not happy with his advances.”
“No.” He answered. “He... subjugglates me.”
Unsurprising. “The Grand Highblood takes from whoever he can because he can.” The Empress said. She returned to her seat. “Perhaps you would prefer a gentler master. Someone who will not make such demands of you.”
The Senator shook his head. “I will not betray the Grand Highblood.”
The Empress quickly stood up and slapped him with the back of her hand. “Idiot.” She spat. “I offer you glory and the chance to pursue whomever your heart desires and you insult me with your refusal.” She stormed away to a corner of the room with her arms folded. “I should kill you myself. I would be perfectly justified in doing so, and think of the message it would send the Grand Highblood: his tools and playthings are mine to destroy.”
She turned around. He looked at her with pleading eyes. “I can not betray the Grand Highblood.”
The Empress understood. The Grand Highblood had some hold over the Senator. A shame. She had the same idea. Her last resort if she was unable to persuade him would have been to demand his loyalty or she would publicly reveal a series of romantic letters between his moirail and the red blooded rebel which would inevitably lead to her execution. Unfortunately, the Grand Highblood preempted her, likely sweeps in advance with some other damaging material. Regardless, there were now other opportunities.
She relaxed her posture and approached the Senator. “I do not know what the Grand Highblood has to keep you in his grip, but I believe I can help release you from him.”
“How?” He asked. The proud Senator was almost reduced to a crying wreck.
“I am the Empress of Alternia. I am not powerless.” She placed a gentle hand on one of his shoulders. “But in turn, you must help me. Will you?”
“How can I know to trust you?”
The Empress was uncertain of what to say. “You have my word.” She promised emptily. The Senator would find out how little worth her word was going to become in short order.
“The Grand Highblood threatens to kill my moirail should I not do his bidding.” The Senator explained. “All his bidding.”
“Then send her out of reach of the Grand Highblood. I offer my palace as a sanctuary.” She spoke before thinking, regretting it immediately. The Senator’s moirail was much more emotional than a normal troll and the Empress had killed her flushed aspiration herself. The Empress had just agreed to put herself much closer to his moirail’s vengeance if she so chose.
“Thank you, Your Condescension.” The Senator sniffed loudly and stood up. “What do I tell the Grand Highblood?”
“Nothing.” The Empress answered. “Let the armies on his borders come as a surprise. Let the valiant defense by Senator Allmight come as a surprise as well.” She grinned.
“Very well.” The Senator said with what almost looked like a smile. “I shall begin discreetly organizing our armies. And I shall send word to my moirail.”
“Excellent.” The Empress opened the door to her study. “Escort the Senator to his quarters for the day.” She said to the slaves waiting outside.
The Senator gave a small bow as he left the room.
Under most circumstances granting your political enemies powerful armies was a profoundly bad idea. But it was a gambit that the Empress had to take. She must take several if she is to have a reign longer than a few sweeps.
The fic generally takes place after the one shot I wrote about Karkat's and Feferi's ancestor. After the failed coup, Feferi's ancestor is in a very weak political position, and the fic would be about the things she would have to do to gain power. From this piece of brainstorming, they're all pretty universally going to be atrocious acts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely and so on, though on Alternia that's just being a good troll. *shrug*
Troll romance would play a critical part in the fic, because that's probably the simplest way for a troll in power to get other trolls to do anything. Since they have to romance on pain of death, well, that just makes things easier.
I'm not too thrilled with how this turned out. Equius' ancestor's mood is pretty all over the place, and I think I tried to stuff too much into this thing.
