"My IQ's the infinite space from here to the moon". It's an ending reference AND a testament to his stupidity! Also, I like how he says he'd rearrange things, but when he had his chance, the most he changed anywhere was writing "TEST" on a wall.
Originally he was created as an intelligence-dampening sphere to keep GLaDOS from being too out of control. He may be lying, but at some point he is put in charge (or puts himself in charge) of monitoring all the test subjects in stasis. He wakes you up once the whole center starts to go critical because he can only do so much as a tiny sphere.

I thought he woke you up because he had had enough and wanted out, and needed someone to carry him? His ruining the extended relaxation center was just a side effect of him not knowing how to wake someone up. At least, thats what I thought.
All Cores dampen her.
The intelligence keeps her from getting too smart, as explained by GLaDOS
Morality controls her over all powers. This explains why she doesn't release nurotoxins early in Portal.
Curiousity core keeps he from asking too much questions. Think about how many questions she asks chell in both Portals.
Feelings (or anger) keeps her from getting too emotional. Also keeps her from judging in Portal (Notice how she keeps mentioning you weight and how your a bad person)
Ysee I think they worked the other way around, since thats how it was implied Wheatley worked.
I think the logic core was designed to make her focus on cake, thus making her less focused on bloody murder. Since it was really obsessed with cake.
Curiosity probably made her ask more questions, 'focus on the science' style. Instead of bloody murder. Again.
Morality is an easy one; no more neurotoxin. It's a conscience. Rattmann said so himself in Lab Rat (if I'm IDing the core correctly when he turns it on), but he also stated that it could be ignored.
Emotion, I don't get. It's probably a core that has suffered more from bleedover from GLaDOS from the others. It might be corrupt. it might have been designed to be always happy. You never know. Then again ,you have to wonder why they built Rick as a suppressing core, even though they never used him. Was his adventure-ness an artifact of creation or corruption? If the latter, can the same be said of the emotion core?
For one, the cores at the end of Portal 1 seemed basically just like normal processing cores.
The curiosity core asked questions to keep focused on science, like you said.
The intelligence sphere, though, I don't think was designed to think about cake, it's just that it was focusing on that at the time.
Same with the emotion core. GLaDOS was just really ticked off at the time. You know, getting killed and all.
As for the cores at the end of Portal 2, I don't think they were necessarily meant for GLaDOS, or at least not merely control.
Space core was meant for focus on space. A little too much focus, though...
Fact core was obviously meant to be Wikipedia after Wikipedia gained sentience. Very useful... Sorta...
Rick, though, is harder to say.
That said, I'm really disappointed that the cores didn't have bigger roles...
I HAVE to blow everything up! It's the only way to prove I'm not CRAZY!
Space, Adventure, and Fact were just corrupted cores. They weren't used on GLaDOS because they didn't work right. As for what they were originally intended to do, who knows? Aperture was just throwing science at the wall to see what stuck.

They stuck.
They stuck there REAL good.

Space core was meant for her not to do science there, or was to keep her from thinking about it.
Adventure was to keep her from wandering to far from Aperture's camera bounds:
Sounds like the Cyro Humans...
The fact was to keep the facts in.
Fact, the Portal Gun is now more valuable than all the organs and incomes of [Subject hometome here]
I was under the impression that Cores were around even before GLaDOS and used for things like watching over subjects in stasis and translating for foreign investors. There was a pre-recorded message near the start of Portal 2 about personality constructs which I thought was from the era before GLaDOS would issue announcements.

This would make the most sense, why would the cores need a management rail to get around if all they do is stay attach to GLaDOS?

I don't know, Wheatley was specifically made to be attached to GLaDOS as the intelligence dampening sphere, but that didn't prevent him from acquiring himself a management rail.
Your chumHandle is sequesteredSage, and you type with as much grammatical finesse as you can muster.

You can't expect Aperture's designs to make sense. Wheatley was never supposed to detach from his rail or use his light, but he still does. They probably just designed management rails so that the cores could move around even though they were supposed to stay in one place forever.

I don't see why you think the cores would do the opposite of what they do, though.
When cores are attached, GLaDOS hears them as voices.
Therefore, it would seem that she'd be distracted by those thoughts, not turned away from them.

Proves my point. They didn't WANT her to think about space, to think about adventure, or about the facts(Which would mean more Rouge A.I., because she would be thinking for herself.)
They were corrupted because the forced her to think about the subjects.
