    AP Tests??? Oh Nooooooooo

AP tests are this coming week for all American students who are taking them. I have little to no knowledge about AP Chem, but I do know nearly everything I need to AP Calculus. This thread is for those who wish to study via forum.
(Also, I left my AP Chem book at school and the test is tommorow. :I)
Ask any questions you have about relevant to AP tests and answer questions you know the answer to.

I'll get things started by answering any AP calc question you can throw at me.
In exchange, can someone tell me exactly how and what a catalyst does? Mainly, how does it affect various variables.

    Re: AP Tests??? Oh Nooooooooo

Ah, AP Tests, brings back fond memories of pulling all-nighters studying until my brain felt like it would burst. I took the AP history, chem, bio, and calc exams (and got 5's on all of them), so I'd be more than willing to help out anyone who has any questions about what to expect.

Lexavain, good luck on AP Chem, it's one of the more difficult exams. A catalyst is a chemical substance (usually a metal or some other inorganic compound) that speeds up the rate of the reaction without being consumed in the process. It does this by lowering the activation energy of the reaction, so that a higher percentage of the molecules will have enough energy to react at any given time. It does not affect equilibrium or how much product will be produced, it just increases the rate of the reaction. For AP Chem this is as much as you should need to know...

Edit: I should also mention that in high school I tutored both the AP Chem and AP Calculus courses, so I have some experience helping people in these subjects.

My high school didn't even have AP!

    No, wait, the other thing...

Are you a god? I mean, ALL OF THEM? I could understand like 5's on half and 4's on the other half but 5's on ALL OF THEM???? That's like a record or something!
Anyways, thanks man. That's a life saver!

Taking European History, Economics, and Government. Took US History last year and got a 5.

I KNOW PEOPLE WHO ARE IN 7 AP CLASSES THIS YEAR AND ARE TAKING EVERY TEST THAT IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS

lol, that's alot, but if you think that's impressive, one of my classmates took eight AP exams. EIGHT. And they GOT ALL FIVES. That is true godlike skills. I believe they took Bio, Chem, History, Calc AB and BC, English Lit., English Comp., and Psychology. My school was really competitive...

Anyway, one of my favorite memories of AP tests is continuing the tradition of drawing random doodles when you don't have any clue to a free response question. My AP chem class all agreed to draw hand-turkeys if we didn't know the answer, and my friend drew a detailed sketch of a dinosaur piloting a fighter jet against the Nazis. Our theory is if you can make the graders laugh, they'll be more lenient. Take that advice with a grain of salt.

What school did you guys go to? St. Zillyhoo's School for the outrageously gifted?
EDIT: going to draw HoNk gamzee in the corner of all questions that I don't know now.

Girlfriend took twelve AP tests throughout highschool career, got eleven fives. I took four and got four fives. Can help people with Chem, Physics B, Comp Sci, and Statistics if anyone has questions.

    We went to public school.

Do you know what we need to know about "Galvanic cells" and "salt bridges"

    Re: AP Tests??? Oh Nooooooooo

That's the foundation of electrochemisty. Supposedly it's about 10% of the test, but weirdly enough the year I took the test there was no questions at all on that topic... A galvanic cell is essentially a battery - a chemical system designed to produce an electric current. You basically separate the two halves of an oxidation-reduction reaction and connect them to produce a current of electrons. Here's a diagram, which you should have memorized, unfortunately if you already don't. The salt bridge contains a neutral salt in a solution which allows the circuit to be completed without interfering with the reaction. It is either filled with something like agarose gel or a membrane so that electrons can't get through it, but the cations and anions will go towards their respective cathodes and anodes to preserve the electric potential of the cell. Remeber that AN OX, RED CAT, oxidation occurs at the anode and reduction occurs at the cathode. In other words, electrons leave the metal at the anode, travel through the wire, produce a current, then reduce the metal ions in the cathode solution. You may have to draw that diagram, exactly as it is, for one of the free response questions.

edit: opps, typo, fixed now, electrons can't get through the salt bridge. The whole point is that it completes the circuit while forcing the electrons through the voltmeter.

    1) Our teacher is usually slow and just barely gets everything in every year.
    2) Snow days galore this year (with no change in the AP date).
    3) They pushed up the AP test dates comparitively to other years.

3 Good reasons my class has given up on the Ap chem test.

Anyways, thanks man! That's a monumental help if it's about 10% of the test!

Taking Calc BC, US History, Bio, French, English 1

I AM SO FUCKED FOR CALC I DON'T EVEN- Continuing my time-honored tradition of cramming the 2 days before. This is oddly specific but about how many series convergence questions would there be? And would they be "here's 5 different series which of them converge?" because those are evil.

My sister got all 5's on her AP's (took 5 one year and some other amount the next), way to leave me a legacy.

I took US History, two years worth of English, Physics B, and Calc AB. Got a 4 in physics, 3s on both English tests, and 5s on Physics and Calc. Didn't crack an AP book once, just did my school work with no extra studying. The only thing I regret was not doing well enough in English to skip English in college. Ask me anything about physics!

How bad is the European History exam? Our school is doing a test run of AP this year and I'm one of the guinea pigs.

We started late (around November) and we still haven't finished the material. Not even at WWII yet.

    I'm gonna die, aren't I?

Like I said though, it's usually 10% of the test, but it may end up being 0% or even 20%. It changes every year, and I took the test two years ago. But it's also all of electrochem that is 10% of the test, do you know how to determine oxidation numbers, balance redox reactions, and predict the voltage of a cell based on reduction potential? I do feel your pain about snow days and having a disorganized teacher, my teacher also skipped over some stuff, and it was up to us to learn it ourselves. It's really frustrating when you keep missing class and the test date just keeps looming closer.

Not that kind of physics! We even skipped relativity because it wasn't on the test.

    Well, yeah, obviously. :b

I plan on cramming like there's no tomorrow, and asking my friends in the course for help. I'm pretty much the only one in the group who doesn't already take 20th Century History as a course. (Wanted to. Had to take physics instead.)
