Re: MSPA Cosplay 3: Would you like some stabs with that?

Awkward question for you folks: I just bought a pair of the really popular Scarecrow nylon fangs (the "subtle" ones) because the reviews said that they fit really well even on oddly-shaped teeth. Well apparently my teeth are a bit too odd for them. On one side of my mouth, my canine and my first bicuspid are switched, so if I want the fangs to look symmetrical I need one of them to go over a double tooth. The fang opening isn't quite wide enough to reach the back of my tooth, so does anyone know of a way to reshape the back of the fang to fit? I'm not sure if I can remold it with heat or if they're sand-able....
I suppose I can fit them for my incisors if necessary, but I'd really prefer not to since I've heard it makes you lisp.
This is for a Vriska cosplay, btw.

Also, I just finished a troll horn tutorial, even though there are a ton of them out there already anyway. It's kind of long and I'm too lazy to reformat it for bbcode, so I'll just link to it instead. @_@

Also, I just finished cutting my Kanaya wig yesterday and I'm still kind of unsure about it. I didn't want to take too much hair off, but I'm afraid it's still a little shaggy-looking. Do you guys have any thoughts?
Dear lawds, everything looks GREAT so far. As for the wig, I can't really see any changes that need to be made. I can't wait to see the finished product!

Hey guys, I have a Model Magic question. I have an unopened package of Terra Cotta colored MM and I was wondering if anyone knew if acrylic paint in troll colors would cover the brown up. I have some white as well, but I'd like to see if I can use that old MM and save the white for future horns.

If you have enough of the glue left over, you can probably mix some up and use an orange stick or cuticle stick or something like that to make a sort of plate to hold it on your tooth. It'll smell and taste horrible and will come out easier than the other one, though. And you have to be really super careful with it while it's curing. Also a trick that I learned because my teeth shifted between when I molded the fangs and used them (retainers woo) squirt some vaseline into the fang before you put it on (after it's cured). It'll help it stay on.

Unless that's not what you're asking for. Sorry, sleep deprivation doesn't go with comprehension.

glub: hahah aww man, thank you! Despite all my frustration wearing it, it was super fun to make and the kind of positive responses I've gotten for my efforts (like yours!) are totally rewarding.

Timeline: If you have all of your stuff gathered beforehand, time spent constructing this thing was a solid day and half for me. I mean, some of that was troubleshooting--made two different versions of the forearm before I found something that worked and the upper arm was suuuuuuuper wide before I trimmed it down, for example. But really, a good chunk of that is just...waiting and holding your pieces to form while the hot glue fully dries. The glove is also super time-consuming--lots of tiny pieces to trace and cut out and glue.

Money-wise, it depends on how much stuff you already have! The poster of the tutorial I linked to up there estimates around $50, but I feel like that is an overly-conservative estimate. Like, if you had to buy everything down to the hot glue gun kind of conservative. If you're a crafty person (which I sense that you probably are), you likely have a lot of the stuff you'll need already. Being an art kid myself, I happened to have a can of silver spray paint lying around, along with all the other paints I used. I would say the craft foam, acetate, brads, and the silver vinyl cost me no more than $30. The vinyl stuff can get expensive if you can't find small single sheets, though. All you'll want to use it for is the fingers, so you really only need a 8.5x11 sized sheet of it (or some equivalent).

Your horn tutorial is awesome (snaps! why didn't I think of that!), and that wig looks freakin' rad, by the way. I don't think the wig needs anything more, in my opinion!

As a dental student, I find your switched teeth terribly interesting. owo

If you have a dremel tool, you're in luck! It's probably the best household approximation of what an actual dentist would use to fix the back of your plastic tooth. I'm not entirely sure what bit would be best to shave down the back of your fang, but my first guess would be one of these sanding bands or grinding stones. (I think you get at least some of those bits in a basic dremel tool kit...) Just take off a little bit at a time and keep trying the fang onto your tooth so you don't hack off too much.

If you don't have a dremel tool, perhaps you could try cutting off the back portion of the fang instead? Like, repeatedly score it with an X-acto knife or something, and when the plastic gets really thin just snap the rest off. I'm not really sure how well this will work because I don't know how hard the plastic is, though. Maybe just using some good old sandpaper and elbow grease would be a better option if the plastic abrades pretty easily.

(Also, I love you for not wanting to put fangs on your lateral incisors. It looks terribly silly, imho.)

    Good luck!

Just popping in to ask if anyone has considered using/thinks that medical scrub trousers would look appropriate for god tier trousers? I'd rather buy scrub trousers than make my own or search for ones I won't be perfectly happy with, and I think I've found some:

If I can't find the right colours, would dyeing be possible, do you think?

If I were you, I'd use baby powder. It does a more-than-fine job with setting makeup. Just remember to use a bunch, if you decide to go through with it.

A dremel might work, although I'd most likely have to use extra liner mix and some superglue to hold the liner in place.

Spoiler for maybe kind of gross mouth things if you hate mouths or something I guess:

Hrm. I'm a guy and I want to do feferi cosplay because I have the hair for it (Vriska has bangs or I'd do her). By "the hair for it" I mean I have long hair that's kind of wavy/curly and I doubt it'd fit under a wig so I'm opting to look for some temporary dye. Has there been any talk of that?

I tried some cheap spray on stuff before and it made my hair feel like tangled straw so I'd prefer something that doesn't make me regret having hair the next day.

Hmmm well I'm not much on dye
    but
If I had to recommend it I'd say
The comb in dye at Hot Topic....
It washes out easily but it takes a lot to put in your hair without it looking green

Might anyone know where to find a good reference for Terezi's cane? I found an old broomstick lying around in my room and I figured I could use it to complete my costume. :B

Naita: Be careful with the baby powder, if you decide to use it. It's fine for short-term use, like maybe a day, but it will damage your skin if you put it on any longer.

This might be a bit of a stretch, but is there anyone in the Ottawa/Outaouais region (or otherwise) planning on attending G-Anime next February? It's a small convention in the Hull sector of Gatineau and I intend on cosplaying Aradia there. I ran into a single Homestuck cosplayer there this year and I'm a bit worried that I would end up being the only one there! HS seems to be relatively obscure in this area. :Y

And a bit more cosplay-related question: How long does it generally take for makeup orders to ship and arrive from wherever you guys order your Ben Nye? I know I shouldn't have to worry much what with three months of time on my side, but it'd still be useful to know.

I'm pretty sure freezer paper is plastic coated?? I mean, on one side

ALSO, anyway, I've been working on my cosplays, just fabric-painted me, my brother's, and my friends troll shirts, and made most of the horns we need.

    I'll post pictures later!

Evy: Ahhh you live in Outaouais? Pfft, I would love to go to G-Anime, if only just to meet Homestuck fans, but I doubt my mother would let me drive all the way from Montreal. :Y

As for the make up, I got mine a week after I placed an order. :>

And freezer paper has a plastic-y side and a paper-ish side (not sure what to call them herp derp).
