    The Homestuck Reference Index

Hello all, been sitting on this for a bit but it's time to make this happen.

The core idea behind this fan project is a index to quickly reference when things happen, are mentioned, or are alluded to in Homestuck. This is a very big, very insane project, but I'm hoping it'll be useful to others and that people will be interested in helping so it doesn't take me until Andrew is finished with his next adventure to finish this.

Each entry in the index will have a very short summery of the page(s) it is linking to, as well as any other relevant information. Eventually this should have a reference to every element of Homestuck, down to the smallest detail such as which pages have cakes in them. I plan to keep the page count to the minimum number of pages in order to make it easy to search through, but we'll have to see how it works out. Currently I have two pages, one for characters, and one for everything else.

Again I am hoping from help here from others, I know this will be a lot of work but if nothing else it'll be helpful to myself with how often I try to pull up small details.

The index can be found here, I've added a few sample entries to give an idea of how I'm thinking of organizing all the information. I am very open to ideas and suggestions, just share them here.

Any questions about the index, please ask them here.

Damn this is ambitious. I don't think I could every even muster up the dedication to even do a fraction of what is required for this, but as I'm planning to read Homestuck once again from the beginning I could probably add to the index as I go and whatnot.

    Re: The Homestuck Reference Index

It is very crazy, but you see how much I reference stuff. In the long run it would save me time I think, if I work on it while doing rereads.

And very happy for any help at all It can even be simple things, like I'm planing tomorrow of quickly seeing the other times cake shows up. That should be pretty quick to see, just a lot of clicking is all.

And thank you for posting, regardless of your involvement or not. Seeing people's interest is a good thing.

I think (and feel free to disagree) that such an index will quickly become unwieldy (not to mention significantly more time-consuming to compile) unless it's an actual... y'know... index. Like, an alphebetical list of subjects and the page numbers on which they appear. Any more detail than that is probably going to make it less usable.

    Re: The Homestuck Reference Index

Which is more or less what this index is, as you can see right now from the main page You have the main entry, like John or Cake, and then for example the cake entry says there is cake on John's dresser on X, X, X, and X pages. The John entry has a Dave section, which currently has John and Dave's first on screen pesterlogs.

It's only when you get to the appearances/references to part that things are not arranged alphabetically.

Speaking of, update being worked on right now, I'm going through pages with cake and also going through when characters are named and animation pops up. Up to page 52 as I type

    Re: The Homestuck Reference Index

In your example, you have ten lines of description, splitting up the list of cake appearances by whether it's an icon for a programming language, an object John doesn't want to eat, a melee weapon, or whatever.

Cake is not one of the most frequent objects to appear in the comic. And it's taking up ten lines before you're even finished with it.

Imagine the entry for, say, stairs.

I warned you about stairs bro

    I told you dog

I like this idea, seems kinda lofty though. Is that site a wiki or something, or is it just you?

    Re: The Homestuck Reference Index

Just me right now, I have two ideas for what I can do if I get help. Reason I hold off on doing a wiki is I don't want to be stepping on any toes with the HS wiki. I do like that resource, I don't like how little they give citations which makes it pretty useless for when I'm looking up links to back up discussion, the main reason I'm working on this.

And, you know, at the moment it is just me. I have this on Google Sites, so if down the road I got people helping who I trusted, it's pretty easy to give someone permisson to mess with the Site as long as they have a Google account. The other idea is getting the info from people, and copy and pasting it into the pages. Both would work, I like the first one more, but I'll have to see.

And a lot of this is seeing how it grows, today is the first real day I've worked on it so if I decided down the road formatting needs work/I need to host it elsewhere/something else, I have that freedom. And very open to ideas from others, I did not got to kick around the idea with others much at all before making the project public here.

Also your icon is awesome :3

I was wondering whether there was a specific way you searched for instances of an item/character? Is it just a simple google search?

I'm doing it by hand, doing another reread of the comic, as a big part of this is what shows up with the pictures. Part of why I'm working on several entries at once, cuts down on how many rereads I have to do.

Another way to do it would be to go through one update at a time and index everything that appears on each page. That should be fairly comprehensive. Except in instances where things turn out to be significant that didn't appear to be at first (e.g. the Flarp manuals. Depending on how detailed you want to be).

    Re: The Homestuck Reference Index

That is a good idea, I might try that for a batch of pages to see how it works. Hmmm, when I work tonight I'll pick out a group and do that. Thinking more starting from the beginning, as it is much easier when I have a smaller cast to work with.

It is going better then I thought it would, I managed to get to page 200 last night and I was staying up to a normal time for me. Not that hard to do when you're watching a show for example.

Ooh, so this is the project you were talking about! I have a present for you - I tried to do an anthology of HS-specific memes before the document size for my timeline got too hefty, but if you are doing this then I will give you what I found. I think I stopped somewhere in Act 3/4, but don't quote me on that.

Thankyouthankyouthank This will help a LOT, I think I'm going to go ahead and add them now as I was planing on starting on work for it for tonight.

I also love your new(?) avatar. Very spiffy.

E: Note to self, you got as far as finishing with note-taking pens.

Now to go do something else as after those two hours or so working on it I need a breaaak.

I've also decided I need to make a wallpaper of the BLUHs (Pages 1442, 1542, 2340, 3433) because they make me laugh too much not to.

    Re: The Homestuck Reference Index

I have thought about the idea of tagging Homestuck. Some people would go through every page adding tags to a database, so we could find where characters and things appear whether or not they are in the text. Just a small project then . I fear it is too late to be of much use though. OTOH HS might very well see its third anniversary.

Wow this is.. Wow. Yeah, I'm sorry I don't have enought time to help but dang do I want to see this finished. This would be an incrediblr feat. If this gets done or near done, this should definitely be posted in the image manipulation thread. They would probably love to see this happen.

We still have quite a bit of story to go, and there is people who will find out about HS after it's done. Regardless I'm having fun so far with it. Looking forward to getting more actually tagging done, that will make it so much easier when I look up who showed up when.

And ahahah, yeah image manipulation would have fun with this. So many pages already, and I've barely started. When I start getting more...

    Re: The Homestuck Reference Index

I would love to help with this. Is there anything I can do? I'd be happy to go through and pick out all the updates with sound. Shouldn't be too hard, I'll just look for [S] and copy all the numbers down. All that would need to happen would be to subtract the first page of Homestuck's number from all of these... which I could do too...

I can't right now, but I could in a couple of moments, if that's alright with you.

    Re: The Homestuck Reference Index

!!!! I am always happy for help, of any kind

Finding pages with sound works, as for other projects all up to what you want to do. Right now I'm mostly messing with the jokes etc, but next update I should finally get back to working on the characters.

If you had a character you like, or a thing, you can give me some links there. A simple thing would be giving me ideas of what outfits show up on what pages. Don't worry about getting them all, just however many work for you.

And doing the number yourself is great, as fun as learning how well I can subtract 1900 from something is.

    Re: The Homestuck Reference Index

On top of the ones you have, here's some more [S] pages in order.

And that's probably enough for the moment.

But you might want to take out 77, 222, 338, 769, 822 and 1026 which are pages with the kids playing their instruments.

I would just check them. I can only say that these are [S], not which kinds.

Actually it only starts off at that. There are a couple of p= number which don't correspond to any page/folder number, so the difference goes up occasionally.

Thank you so much Veritas, that was a big help! The info you gave will also help me went I enter more in, I moooostly stuck to animation but there was some places I messed with other entries.

And I will need to make sure to look at this again after nap, all nighters are fun now and again but they also mean Rena is tired right now. So she might have made some mistakes, but luckily that is really easy to see.

You mean like Ride? So far I'm going with just calling them by name, we'll see if I stick with that but it's not like there is that many of them. Just a few hidden flashes and the Exile pages mostly. But again I could decide to number them or call them like 938b.

E: I want thoughts on that, do you think I should go with their name, like Ride, or should I go with 938b?

Hmmm... every time I look at your character page I feel like we should combine forces. LHS is basically a collection of character tags anyway. xD If you want the Ref Index to stay separate, then feel free to steal from my stuff as it helps you!

    Re: The Homestuck Reference Index

Us pooling our resources more would make sense.... LHS is very as is useful, as not too many things bother with the chronology of things(The index included), and also it's very good for quickly reviewing things. You hit the major points of the character, I deal with the tiny bits.

But working together more, as there is a lot of crossover with both, would be a good thing. I realized after the fact when I finished getting to whatever point I did with Serenity, that I should have probably been updating the index about her too. I could have at least given myself of a cheatsheet of what pages she shows up on, even if I didn't get to writing out stuff. Would have made things quicker down the road.
