Don't worry, you aren't the only one.
The first few times I played, I started out fine, and then everyone starved because I couldn't figure out farming.
Then I tried again a while later, and managed to actually farm and whatnot, and then I accidentally screwed up basically everything and quit.
...I could be completely wrong though.

I'm gonna come out of lurking just to say: You will most likely never understand this game if you don't find a tutorial of some sort.

    Not really.

You will never survive this game if you cannot find a relatively current and well maintained information archival website that can keep you currently aware of all the things you are currently able to do in the game that either don't work, work by some strange artifact workaround, are incredibly buggy and will make your dwarves do stupid things/become immobile on one single tile/go crazy and get beat the fuck down by your resident huntress and her ferocious hunting companions and remain traumatized for the rest of his life, or will outright crash your game and make smoke come out of your computer.

Aside from that, losing is the only way to play the game!

In Dwarf Fortress you win when all your dwarves die in the most unexpected, comical, and hopefully ironic fashion possible, or you become no longer able to play it because you broke the shit out of it

Oh hi jaxy. Anyway, I updated the OP to include info to help those who want to get into it. If there's anything more that would be good, I would like anyone to post it.

Also, I want to say something:

Tarn Adams reminds me somewhat of Andrew Hussie. Both are working on something ridiculously big in scope for the medium through which they are working, and both just so happen to have their life nearly revolve around this thing that they're working on. The biggest difference is that Homestuck actually has an end in near sight, while DF probably won't be done within the next 16 years. Overall, it's kind of like a fey mood in DF:

"This is a digital video-game. All craftsmanship is of the highest quality. It is encircled with hanging bands of cat tallow and menaces with spikes of elf tallow. On the item is an image of magma in dwarf leather. The magma is burning dwarves."

"This is a digital webcomic. All craftsmanship is of the highest quality. It menaces with spikes of fruit gushers and is encircled with hanging bands of memes. On the item is an image of 4 kids. The kids are laboring. The artwork relates to the creation of a Sburb session in 4/13/2009. On the item is an image of 12 trolls. The trolls are laboring. The artwork relates to the creation of a Sgrub session on an unknown date."

EDIT: I suppose the current peak of this feature will be learning to be a necromancer and then animating your own severed arm as a permanent traveling companion

    Oh my.

Just got this game today, god damn. This game is quite arguably the most complex work of gaming in existence. AND IT LOVE IT!

    I'M DOING IT MAN

    I'M LEARNING DWARF FORTRESS

I've got the basics down. My dwarves are surviving, but I need to expand and find the Fun. Nothing's really going on besides mining a billion bedrooms. Oh, but I guess my bookkeeper/weaver has been possessed. And has been sitting in the meeting hall like a ticking time-bomb. I should do something about that.

Here are the tutorials I used, by the way.

Yeah I used the same one. If you cant get that possessed guy what he wants I would advise walling him inside his workshop, lest he decide to bring a whole bunch of fun to the fort early

I'm pretty much where Username is. I can have my dorfs survive, but I haven't gotten to anything besides building a million bedrooms. I'm also having trouble managing the 46-ish dorfs I have in my fort.

I usually only get to the screen where I have to pick from a list of a thousand skills for my dwarfs and give up before the anxiety kills me. I'm sorry, but shouldn't a game be playable without a walkthrough? I really like the world generation part and will actually read through tons of history in the world I make. In fact, the legends mode is probably the one I've "played" the most. I also make the occasional adventurer because that's pretty straight forward even if you always end up mauled by something large and angry very quickly.

I used to have this problem. I didn't tend to give up there, but I always spent wayyyyy too long on that screen.

One caveat: it doesn't have a miner assigned, and it doesn't have any axes. You can make an axe easily enough, though, and there's always a dwarf with skills you don't need yet to take up mining for a bit.

    ...

Honestly, the only things you really need to start a fort are miner, mason, woodcutter, and farmer
Starting without even one skilled miner or even one axe sounds incredibly difficult
Given the ludicrous amount of mining you have to do in the early game, it actually seems very difficult to have anything less than two skilled miners in the starting seven

Really, as a newbie, it's best to not have any skills assigned at all. You can assign them when the gameplay actually starts. No, it's better to increase the amount of food and drink you have on embark so you can get used to farming before everyone dies.

Oh hey Dwarf Fortress thread how you doin'?

I just started playing last week, using this tutorial

Except with moods. I had the first dwarf with a strange mood way earlier than him, and when he claimed the crafts workshop i freaked out and thought he'd start claiming buildings like he wanted to conquer my whole fortress. I didn't know what to do and I was very angry at him so I kicked him out of his room.

    Now, questiontime.

Children: What should I make them do?

    also

Military: Can they train with hammers without killing each other? I gave them hammers to fight a goblin raid, and after it was done I set them to rest. Now I have three unconscious dwarves, two of them with mild injuries, and a dead one.

Oh and also also, regarding strange moods. Can you influence them?

P.S: I'm using the lazy newbie pack linked on the tutorial, and I'm planning to download version 0.31 once I'm done. Is there a similar updated pack?

I read the article on Tarn Adams in the OP, and I gotta say I feel kinda bad for him. He doesn't do much besides Dwarf Fortress, does he? I kinda hope he branches out or finds something else to do....

Don't worry about moods. They're not a problem. Just surround them with a wall if you don't have what they need, and let them out if they don't go berserk when they finally go insane.

Children can only deconstruct buildings and gather plants that are farming.

The military can train with hammers without killing each other.

Strange moods can be influenced with burrows. All it changes, however, are the materials that they can be made of.

The lazy newb pack is fully updated to the latest version.

He doesn't need to. DF is his dream. It'll be remembered for a very long time.

Not very, if you have a really nice dining room and other such things for happiness.

Also, the military can train with hammers without killing each other simply because... they don't hurt each other when training! Sparring always shows up as this:

"The hammerman strikes the hammerman in the head with his +silver warhammer+, lightly tapping the target!"

Also, silver is the best material for warhammers.
