Re: Dwarf Fortress Chat: The adventures of Urist and his right-hand right hand!

I just started a new fortress and oh boy this is gonna be fun.

Only in the first year I had like half of the map burn down because there's a magma pool at the surface, so there's a bunch of fire imps walking around. I also found some kind of huge pit when I was trying to dig a place for my first workshops and OH SNAP BATMAN IS OUT TO KILL ME. Fortunately the batmen were disappointingly weak and I could kill them with my miners.

    I didn't use one either :P

I also didn't use one for modding, I just looked at the tags and followed examples.

Re: Dwarf Fortress Chat: The adventures of Urist and his right-hand right hand!

Finally managed to get into this game. Not sure how I feel about it. It's impressively complicated and realistic, but I haven't been finding it particularly fun to play with.

It sort of feels like I'm spending most of the game navigating through the Labours menu for each dwarf, making sure that I don't have any elite warriors hauling food, or making sure that my mason isn't running all the way back up to the surface whenever he finishes crafting something. If I had the ability to tell a particular dwarf "do this, right now, and then go back to your normal labours once the task is complete", the game would be a hell of a lot more fun to interact with. It wouldn't even hurt the game's realism, so it feels like a strange feature to omit.

No way you figured out the current military menu.

That thing is a black hole.

So I generated a lazy newb world (You know, the kind that's supposed to be easy.)

First thing I do is decide to look into the legends... I find that the draconic (AKA current) age is rule by the dragon Etog, which apparantly is decidedly hostile to anything and everything. Seeing as this will be my first fortress where I actually know what i'm doing, it is more or less certain that Etog will produce tons and tons of fun.

Also, a random dwarf just decided to worship him.

Edit: It will be very [B]fun[B] if said dwarf meets Etog face to face and gets burned to death.

Are you using one of those labor-managers like Dwarf Therapist or Dwarf Manager?

Dwarf Manager made me pretty happy.

Eh, only one dragon isn't that bad, and there should be 80 people in your fort by the time the dragon comes.

And by "should", I mean "it won't come until there are at least 80".

Usually you'd have 2 or 3 megabeasts like dragons. At least dragons can't fly :P

Oh, they can't? That's a relief, I guess... I might just send thousands of urists to their deaths against him for fun.

Besides, FBs are far, far worse than dragons, and far more numerous as well.

Well I do not plan on breaching into any caverns any time soon (or even at all) on this fortress unless it miraculously goes really really well.

Also, I have several gigantic, muscular groundhogs outside...

mabye it's something in the water...

Not that this is a bad thing, seeing as I could easily slaughter them for food.

    Edit: Started a new fortress.

FBs are the reason i'm making a cave-in DAS on my cavern entrance That way when the HOLYGODGIANTMONSTERAROUNDTHECORNER stops being around the corner and just becomes HOLYGODGIANTMONSTER I can just drop a train on em'

Pfft, FB's, Titans, and demons are all half the size of a fully grown roc or whale.
My military doesn't even need armor to defeat them.

They don't have poisonous/venomous gas/farts/bites though. A FB or MB would pretty easily wipe your military out if they were unarmored, and probably even if they are depending on the circumstances.

So my hunter shot a groundhog today...

The groundhog now has a punctured lung from the first bolt
It's intestines ruptured from the second.

The third proceeded to break it's leg.

The fourth went right through it's ear.

The fifth hit it's front paw and severed it.

After this is proceeded to get away from my hunter and vomit profuseley ALL OVER THE PLACE.

I had to send my military to euthanize it at which point my Militia Captain BEHEADED IT WITH A SPEAR.

Good god that was so grusome.

I need to get my troll mod better done with sometime. Yes, it's fully playable, there are more creatures than trolls, there's a replacement for a megabeast (Pyralspite-style dragon FTW), a few new metals, 2 entities, new weapons, and some nasty rock, but DAMN if I don't feel like it's incomplete.

(rumbles off to bump own thread)

I think I trapped one of my dwarves underground.
Told you about stairs bro. It keeps happening.
Credit to Shortpacked! for my Avatar, which is Clock King, which I colored green to make into a felt member because clock motif, but then ashdenej realized I did a weak job and gave me a better version without my even having to ask.

This is why you use stairs instead of ramps.

Though I think there is the risk of tantruming dwarves falling down stairs...

How high do you have to be to evne DO that? Getting in to dwarf fortress without a guide is like trying to get into a baseball game without tickets. You can try all you want, but in the end you'll have to go buy tickets anyways.

Am I honestly the only one who used TinyPirate's tutorial?

Well I plan on looking at tutorials after my inevitable failure of course.

I'm just going to see how fast I can fail.

EDIT: seeing as I can't even begin, I'll actually go read a tutorial now

I have never used a numpad at all when playing, even when I do have one.
