Fuck Toasters: The Complaining About Electronics Thread

Alright, in this thread we whine about how slow our Macbooks are and how shitty this refrigerator is.

Basically, something's wrong with all the electronics in my house. Apparently, the previous owner installed alarm systems for a living and completely fucked up the wiring. When we got our internet upgraded recently, the guy working on it said that the fact that we had internet at all before was a complete fluke.

At the moment however, our air conditioning system is completely fucked. The compressor's broken, or something, and it's gonna cost about $2,500 to fix. It's about 80 degrees Fahrenheit in here, last time I checked.

So what's wrong with your microwaves?

Hey now, a toaster is just a death ray with a smaller power supply!
    Show some respect!

And I'm getting real sick of my conksuck, middle of nowhere rural internet connection.
It loses connection like once an hour.
    Can barely play TF2.
    Lousy stupid friggen...

No matter how good my headphones are, they always break or fail in some way. I had a good Logitech headset, and it broke at both joints (Where the part that covers you ears extends out of the main part that goes over your head, I don't know the proper terms). I then got a wireless headset from them, and it stopped working the same day because a wire fizzled out somewhere. I got a replacement, and this one's starting to lose connection every now and then.

    I always had trouble too.
Except in my case, the plus always seemed to be the thing to break.
That's why I've taken to just buying cheap, $5-$10 headphones.
Why waste the money when the expensive ones break just as easily?

Oh, that reminds me. My earbuds are pretty borked. The left side is really quiet, and the right side plays both sides.

The disc drive on my laptop is rather awful, too. Quite often when it plays discs, it'll emit a really loud buzzing/grinding noise. Other times it'll just be a low hum. Not sure what's doing it.

Oh hey, speaking of crappy earbuds, my only working pair stopped working yesterday after having them for four months.
Went out and bought a $10 pair today; hopefully they'll last longer than the last pair.

My old Skullcandies broke clean off. I took them off one day and the bud stayed in my ear. I got the warranty this time.

I'd also like to point out just how horribly awful it is that I can't use my iPod without iTunes. If I am wrong about this I beg of you to correct me, I miss manually adding Amazon MP3's so much.

See, I've never bothered with Skullcandies because I've heard they don't last long at all, and also they cost around $20, so there's that.

Everything that was said about buying only cheap earbuds because I cycle through them so quickly. Literally. I've beheaded three pairs of earbuds in the last six months when the bud fell out (only wear them in one ear because of THE LAW) and got caught in the spokes before I could stop and rescue them.

I am peeved at my laptop for having only two gigs of memory (upgrading to four, though) and not being able to run forty tabs of Chrome, GIMP, and TF2 at the same time. I am a horrible, demanding multitasker.

And sometimes Chrome randomly freezes if I've had the browser open for too long and I have to reboot the entire laptop?

My Xbox has been red ring'd for about two and a half years now. My friend lent/gave me his, and then I lent/gave it to another friend, but I really do crave Xbox again, specifically Mass Effect 2. I may finally cough over the money to get my original one fixed.

    Because it's a brand name.

I can happily say that I've never bought an Apple product with the sad exception of getting my music off of iTunes. I got my iPod for free from my sister. :U

Same here, except I got the iPod for Christmas from my mac loving cousin's family.

Every time I boot up XP so that I can play TF2 or Civilization I am instantly reminded why I use Ubuntu for everything not gaming related. God I hate proprietary operating systems: why can't the AAA games be ported to run native on linux?

Re: Fuck Toasters: The Complaining About Electronics Thread

See, I always had the opposite experience.
XP and 7 never really gave me any legitimate troubles, but whenever I had to use Linux in my computer engineering lab, it just generally filled me with rage, and was annoying un-intuitive for me.
Granted, that was largely due to lack of experience, as well as the fact that it was redhat distribution, and also the fact that I am first and foremost a hardware person, with software usually being my bane, but still...
I dunno, overall I just haven't had enough problems (plus I game to much) to really want to switch...

Re: Fuck Toasters: The Complaining About Electronics Thread

    Fucking.

Dishwasher broke a month ago. Fridge is breaking. Washing machine breaks down every few months. My laptop lasts 20 minutes without the power cord. I have a Dreamcast with a dead laser that I'd love to fix. My DS Lite hinge broke in January.

    Fuck electronics.

On the subject of Skullcandy, they're not so bad if you pay $6 for one of their $30 models. But I agree that their sound has progressively gone to shit. I remember the first pair of skullcandy headphones I got, they were honestly great (I was probably 15), because I'd only had SHIT headphones before then. But in the 6 years since, I've had progressively worse experiences with them.
    Streets ahead.

Re: Fuck Toasters: The Complaining About Electronics Thread

My laptop is a reliable machine that serves my purposes, but it isn't perfect in any sense.

    1) The graphics card only seems to work properly about half of the time (detrimental to my Indie Games).

    2) The down key has become permanently stuck in a pressed down position. Amazingly, it still works properly aside from that.

    3) On a few occasions, the laptop has shut itself down. One time this happened along with my 'f' key not working properly and it making horrifying screeching noises, and the other time it did this whenever I tried to play a certain online game. This is not a frequent occurrence.

    4) Sometimes it just slows down while I'm using the internet or playing a game for some reason. Also, yesterday it stopped receiving any wireless signals altogether (it claimed that there were no connections available which I knew from past experience was bullshit), but this was only temporary.

    5) Due to my laziness, it may lack a virus protection program (mostly because the free trial ran out and me/my dad haven't bothered to pay the $50-something dollars it would take to get the full program). Recently, it contracted about 23 cookies which, while not harmful to my computer are a nuisance and a privacy concern.

#5 is my own damn fault, and parts of #3 happened after I accidentally poured water on the keyboard, but the rest are things that I don't exactly know what to do about. Thankfully, they don't seem to affect my laptop too much and thus I can still use it relatively normally.

Re: Fuck Toasters: The Complaining About Electronics Thread

My laptop is actually okay. Oh, the internal speaks haven’t worked in three months (except on bootup) because the hardware itself thinks there’s an optical audio cable in there (there never has been), but they sucked anyway who misses them (and it’s possible a patch Apple released this week will finally fix what tripping the microswitches didn’t, but I don’t feel like rebooting right now). The battery doesn’t last very long, which is better than the battery I had before which just up and stopped working one day. Yes, the keyboard got so broken in and peeling around the sides that I had to buy a replacement.

No, the real problem is that it’s the oldest, lowest spec C2D MacBook model and it’s kind of feeling its age with processes that ought to be fast being... normal speed (and I mean the RAM and hard disk have been souped up over the years). So I gotta complain because this piece of awesome doesn’t fricken break and provide me with an excuse to get a new one (it stutters on 1080p video sometimes but really it’s okay). When I got it four years ago seriously expected I’d have enough money scraped together to replace it by now, but that plan (and several contingency plans) went to hell, so here I am doing something it has no problem doing: bothering the Internet.

Re: Fuck Toasters: The Complaining About Electronics Thread

It's like last year all my electronics were fixed at once.
We finally replaced the refrigerator (It leaked), and my computer quit it's addiction. Let me explain.

You see, for the longest time this computer had a BSOD every five minutes. As you can tell, it was kind of inconvenient.
So we had extensive surgery. We tried to fix it with virus scans, registry cleaners, system restores, etc. So we replaced the whole thing, inside out.
Can you believe that it still gave me bluescreens after I replaced the motherboard, graphics card, sound card, RAM, disk drive, CPU, and the god damn fan?
...What else did we replace? I forget.

Anyways, I ran hijackthis and suddenly... It was fixed. Completely. I haven't had a problem since.

    I believe in miracles.

Well, the battery on my laptop is about as useful as a box of rocks wrapped in tinfoil and dies after like 5 minutes after I unplug it. Not to mention the fact that I break nearly every cheap electronic I buy for my laptop. I also had a popcorn popper that burst into the flames the first time I used it. It was a sad day with a severe lack of popcorn.

My webcam is a complete piece of crap, I have to shout for anybody to hear me on the other end, which pisses my mom off a lot. It also actually causes my computer to get blue screen of death more then half the time while using it. On the plus side, my computer recovers quickly from BSoD's. I also have an old laptop that the software works perfectly in...but not the hardware. The keyboard doesn't work, you can't charge it cause IT JUST WON'T CHARGE. You have to ram it into the jack really hard to make it. And oh yeah, I need to get a DVD out of there that's about 4 weeks overdue from the library, and to do so I'll have to take it apart....and my mom is retarded and won't let me get the screwdrivers necessary to.

Microwaves have been annoying to me lately. They just have this frustrating tendency to conk out solely in the radiation part, giving a perfectly good impression of turning on lights and spinning, and then... nothing. And the one microwave that does work has a broken clock, so my mother's convinced it's leaking nuclear fumes. ...my mother is not exactly the most rational person.
