perhaps the Squiddle society likes to larp a bit? They fight each other with foam or padded weapons for fun, re-enacted some long forgotten war amoungst the squiddles. The idea of killing someone is simply smacking them with a fake sword and them laying on the ground for a while... something they enjoy doing... in entering Sglub, they find their opponents aren't exactly playing fair and staying "dead"... so they think the game has changed and alchemitize their fake swords/guns/shovels/axes with various other things, making them surprisingly deadly, though to them this just makes the imps play fair and stay dead... so they keep ahold of these new game weapons even using them on each other, honouring old rivalries and having battles with one another... they find that their opponents die but eventually come back to life (their dream selves return after a gentlemanly end battle tangle (squiddle kiss)) leading to more confusion as the squiddle get the idea that these new weapons work like their old ones, only the opponents stay dead slightly longer....
Little do they know that upon the second meet-up and battle the opponent doesn't come back. Several squiddles are lost in the confusion as the fake wars get way more real.
Perhaps squiddles are immortal like Elves? In that they can be killed but don't die of old age... which is why squiddles would be completely unfamiliar with the concept and "kill" for fun. Only to find themselves in a situation and with tools that make the killing really stick.
I meant the platonic-ness (otherwise how would you ever get any genetic diversity?) but I had trouble explaining that.
@monkeysky That mutation thing is good. When the squiddles decide to grow up (or end up seperated from society) or whatever they slowly turn into horrorterrors and eventually gain the ability to travel between different universes and to the other weird horrorterror places. They also become irrational. This happens to one squiddle, who subsequently becomes feferi's lusus (I don't feel like remembering random mixes of letters, okay? ).
It is incredibly tragic.
I think the mutation should only occur under specific circumstances or occur under different circumstances though.
I also like this idea because it supports my winged cyclops telepathic twin idea.
Yay!
Edit: actually I prefer the horrorterror-when-god-tier idea now that I bothered to read all the posts on the last page.
Also, that way of working around the pronoun thing is good

So since we aren't going with the dystopia thing, I'd like to support this:
Which brings me to my next point, my suggestion about what kind of civilization the squiddles should be. It can be generalized that there are three major types of civilization Economical, Political, and Militaristic. Now all civilizations have all three, but usually there is one the predominates the others; for humans it is economy, for trolls its military. I was thinking that the squiddles could be the third civilization type and be very politics heavy. It would make sense in respect to the game with the type of environment we're discussing here. Especially with the number of players we are dealing with here. There are far too many to just boss around and have them actually expect to follow you, much the way it was with Karkat. A certain bit of charisma is needed in order to get that many people to work together and come to a compromise on how to work together to achieve a common goal. It would take people that are great orators, time managers, delegaters, and compromisers, in order to effectivly manage that number of people; the qualities that are required to be a successful social and political leader.
Only because this is genius and the best idea of all time and I wish I had remembered it..
OF ALL. TIME.
Also, I think Mythee mentioned 'teenage girl social strata drama' which could apply to the characters. Although the actual politics would be more akin (imo) to France before the revolution. Court intrigue, assassination, bribery and whatnot.
Furthermore, I know it was our intention for everyone to go off and design their own characters, but shouldn’t we cooperatively figure out the basics of the characters before we make our own fansquiddles? Just so that the characters and the setting and the plot are cohesive and functional and all that.
One last thing: if they’re going to have leader, maybe it should be Alpha? For symbolic reasons?
if they’re going to have leader, maybe it should be Alpha? For symbolic reasons?
That sounds good enough for me, I can get behind that idea.
Also, I've been extremely busy last week, this week, and will be next week. Sorry Im not getting much done. XP
The leader should have some flaw, like Karkat's anger, and John's dopiness.
For the whole "word"/"words" problem , maybe it should be the hero of script? I think it sounds more mystical anyway.
As for STRIFE, since the trolls called it GRIEF, I think the squiddles should have their own synonym, maybe SKEIN?
Oops, we haven't been very active and stuff.
By the way in the original IRC conversation there was something we never talked about in this thread: Scratches.
There were about four of them.
Sandswept- (noun) what happens when the game of Sburb is pushed to its absolute limits and beyond.

I mentioned a scratch. I thought it might be interesting if there were two games being played on two different planets, both being unable to complete the game due to missing certain aspects in their governments and fundamental lifestyles... and as luck would have it (or fate?) both games were scratched simultaneously, leading to both games being merged into one game in the hard reset... and literally both worlds merging into one in the end.

That...
That is a very interesting proposition you made there. Enough so to make me want to sleep on it and mull it over. So I'll get back on this later. I got some head way on making up characters, despite having shit to do (bored mainly ;P), but I'm contemplating how I want to go about doing it. Should I:
1. Make nameless character profiles with a bullet-ed list of a basic personality outline
---Should I add too the bullets with quirks, interests, strife specibus, etc. Or should I hold off on that until later where we can do that once we get further along with the characters
---Or should I do it in paragraph form.
2. Make nameless full MSPA style introductions with everything mentioned in point 1 and the first point under it.
3. Go ahead and give names to the characters either using method 1 or 2.
I'm personally leaning toward method one alone; just make some basic character outlines. We can assign them names as a group once that has been done. Mainly though I wanted to get some input first.

But perhaps only come up with a few to start with? No point doing all 48 if everyone's going to decide they don't like it and you're doing it wrong (not that we'd ever say it in those words).
well it's not like we have to decide that IT IS ALL WRONG I AM COMPLETELY AGAINST EVERY SINGLE THING GRR what he's just giving are basic concepts to revise and edit and build from, not a single concrete fact that we either like or don't like
at this stage things are just ideas, concepts, suggestions; all of these things are just malleable thoughts that we can alter as we see fit, but we have to start somewhere
some basic character outlines are a good place to start
and i would like if we get those in all at once so we have a good idea of what character interaction is going to be like and have a cohesive, well thought out cast
so 48 outlines would pretty much be the perfect place to start
get it
Yay, first day to sit down and seriously work on this shit. Im going to post the first 15 archetypes. Start shooting specifics for each character type at me, like personalities quirks and such, and I will take them into consideration. I decided to do them this way so we can get this thread talking again(it really slowed down : [ ), and that way I have a constant flow of ideas if I get stuck. So please post.

so we get to cherry pick off of this list of basic character ideas then?
Also, do we have a pretty final list of types? (breath, time, etc?) I could get to drawing what the symbols would look like if you guys want (other than the 12 canon symbols which Hussie seems like he's going to reveal sooner or later)
Well the list is what we are running with right now. So If you have ideas for different character archetype in mind that is different from the ones above and like it, post and we can look at swapping it in. I'm also looking for more points to add about each character to define them more. I got some basic conflicts between some of the characters, but this isn't really developed enough to, say, write an MSPA introduction for each.
We also have to give them a gender and a name. We can worry about a symbol after all that i suppose.

you'll have to forgive me, as I'm more of a visuals kind of guy. How things will look is important to how I view things working out...
I'm honestly just wanting to toss all the options together, title, color, basic persona, world side, and just mash them into one solid option and create something that works from the combo.
I know a lot of people don't work that way though and probably want to cherry pick each of these options personally.

COMPROMISE TIME.
We should just stick a bunch of things together and then change them as we see fit.

I don't think we have any obligation to uphold those kind of patterns, even if we can extrapolate a pattern from two sessions.
EDIT: Hey, here's a question: what sort of technology do the Squiddles use? I'm tempted to say biotechnology, but maybe that was too much the Troll's domain? Obviously if we want to avoid a technology overlap then the Squiddles will have to have quantum technology
