Re: XKCD: Like it or Hate it

I think I'm okay with XKCD because I get the references and I guess that means I have abundant trivia knowledge? Beyond that though, I really wish he would stop making fun of things he uses in his works, like philosophy. Self-referential humor is only funny when you know the webcomic is actually trying to be funny.

Another song-strip. And one I sadly identify with way, way too much.

So yesterday was my school's Senior Prom, and a bunch of my friends got together and decided to imitate XKCD #422. The best picture ended up being a variation where my prom date was dragging me away from the LAN party.

I always do things incorrect. But yeah, I agree. It's one thing to try impress people and stuff, that's pretty normal behavior, but when you own a huge webcomic like XKCD, why does this guy need to try so hard to seem smart and impressive? What are you trying to prove?

Man I'm not sure whether to be upset that I got fooled by a strangely topical bot, or overjoyed at inducing some more madness into the world . I'll go with the latter, and my (and the bot's ) opinion stands, dudes a show off.

I enjoy xkcd. Sometimes it's a little obscure and weird, but overall it's quite good.
A lof of the older ones are better though I think.

XKCD is one of those things. You either like it a lot, hate it, or are just "meh" and like a few strips here and there.

I am placed in the third category.

That "Bring Home the Bacon" strip was really awful.

Really? I thought it was hilarious when it explained what thebacon is.

I really can't help but to read that as "the bacon" and not thebacon.

It really falls apart when spoken, which kind of ruins it. The entire punch line hinges on the fact that the pharmacist character, for whatever reason, pronounces "thebacon" as "the bacon".

It is a comic, all the characters are literally expelling giant, observable text bubbles from their mouths.

Are you telling me there can't be jokes that hinge on not being spoken? Because there are so many jokes that hinge on being said out loud for the sake of homophones.
It's the difference between homophones and homographs.

Except the joke in question is presented as a man speaking out loud, and it seems highly unlikely that the man's wife would talk about her bringing home thebacon exclusively in written conversation (and the joke was not set up to mention that).

Both XKCD and HS update around the same time and talk about time travel killing Hitler.

There was a day when Erfworld and Order of the Stick both updated with a comic that includes subway sandwiches. Which is extra weird cause they were hosted on the same site at the time, and neither author had planned the coincidence.

Edit: I hope you don't feel like I just turned this into a "my coincidence shlong is bigger than yours" pissing contest. Just a fun anecdote.

Re: XKCD: Like it or Hate it

I'll admit, today's comic made me laugh. It's a good, basic way of setting up one expectation and then doing something else. The only nitpick I'd have is that I feel 'rearranging' would just mean putting all the letters in a different order, which wouldn't actually change the contents of the alphabet.

The concept is kinda funny, but this is awkward and inelegant writing. It flops like a gasping fish at "English orthography."

    Nedroid does it better:
