Just For Fun: Homestuck MTG Set

I'm starting a for-fun project designing a Magic set built around Homestuck. I'm currently scouring old sets for potential "reprints" and looking at designing a good number of original cards; I'm debating whether to set it up as a loosely-defined block (Acts 1-4, Hivebent, Acts 5.2-onward) or as a set of 'theme' decks, though a lot of the potentially appropriate cards are out of color for the character they're associated with.

I'll probably have three iterations of each human kid--an initial legend, a set 2 legend with different abilities more reflective of their upper echeladders, and a set 3 planeswalker card representative of god-tier. I'm unsure if I'll have as many for the trolls, we'll see.

I'm looking to set up each card with Homestuck art, either official or something fanmade, to fit the card itself, plus fresh flavor text. If anybody's interested in this project, speak up =P And yes, there's spoilers below.

What a coincidence, I was just thinking today about a Homestuck MTG Set, maybe even implemented for a MtG program (like Cockatrice). I even thought that god-tiers would be great as planeswalkers ("John, Heir of Breath").

I know there's a thread about a HS card game, but I thought "well, MtG is already there, the rules have years of adjustments, we can judge how balanced a card is, etc, why not make a HS MtG set?".

But in my mind, there would be some things that would make it not 100% MtG compatible - and that's why I didn't give it much thought. Mainly: the 5 lands would be the main grist types "Build Grist", "Shale", "Chalk", "Amber", "Uranium" (or, for making sense of the word "land": instead of a Mountain generating red mana, we could have a LOHAC generating Amber grist).

I do have interest in this project, even if I'm not sure how I could help for now.

I'm curious as to your thoughts on the one original card design I posted. As for help? If anybody wants to contribute art assets to use that'd be cool, otherwise I'm not too fussed. Just suggest old cards for me to 'reprint' or toss out ideas for original card designs.

I do agree with you. Even my first idea, replacing mana with grist, was still trying to keep the MtG framework, but I wasn't that much attached to that thought anyways.

I liked your Dave card (I guess he is time-traveling to the same battle for more damage, am I right?), but shouldn't it cost 2RRU ? (as most time-related cards are blue). I just think there should be a way for the Legendary rule to act just between different players - so that you could have more than one Dave (at least the attack-generated tokens) but if an opponent plays one, both Daves die.

I agree with the banning of banding - confusing rules are confusing.

Also: I guess each card with Cascade would take 2 months to be added to the set

I think a whole block of this would be absolutely awesome! If you were to do that you'd need to come up with how each color represents itself mechanically and flavor-wise. What do you think the mechanics or theme of the block would be?

off the top of my head, it would be cool to have a minor enemy color theme. RU would be time manipulation, w/g or g/b could be eldritch horrors, stuff like that. We could copy some of the tools rosewater gives us, like whenever he talks about designing the skeletons of a set he talks about designing the commons first

I think for equius the abilities should be more flexible, but he should be an akroma-like creature. RW seems like a good color combination for him

Wasn't positive on the colors, GW probably fits though. The effect really wouldn't fit into those colors though. Thinking Jade would probably be WU, and Rose would be UB?

As there was an idea on the deleted post that I forgot to repeat, I'll paste and reformat it here:

(the reasoning is: Heat -> Fire -> Red, Clockwork -> Time manipulation -> Blue)

Aradia: WB (white being ghosts and archaeology, whereas black being her connection to the dear)
Sollux: U, possibly UR (the red part repersenting his full psysic powers having redish effects (direct damage probably), plus because it's Sollux)
Karkat: R (angry, hasty, despises social order; not to mention his blood)
Tavros: G, possibly GW (connection with nature, white from a knight theme)

Nepeta: G (lives in a cave, hunts for food)
Kanaya: W (sunlight connections- rainbow drinkers would be W as a tribe, her tendancy to auspestice)
Terezi: WU (her tendency to play mind games and predict the future, and her love of "JUST1C3")
Vriska: UB (mind games again, her psychic powers, and her greed)

Equius: GW (for reasons stated above)
Gamzee: R (when sober anyways, possibly starts off as a weak/harmless creature that gets more powerful)
Eridan: ?R (red definitely because of his tendancy to flip out and kill stuff, not sure what other colors though- don't think he's mono-red)
Feferi: W (generally nice, wants to create better order)

Firstly, hrm, yeah, I guess it does. This is a personal project subject to my own aesthetic tastes and design decisions, though, so I'd like it to remain separate. I really like that idea for Eridan though.

Secondly, here's a rundown of how I see each of the characters:

JOHN: GW.

ROSE: BW.

DAVE: R/RU.

JADE: UG. The functions of the Simic colors as pertaining to her and her role should be clear; she'll probably shift from UW to UG and then to a Bant-colored planeswalker.

ARADIA: As you said, WB for spirits.

TAVROS: I dunno.

SOLLUX: UR.

KARKAT: RB.

NEPETA: G, definitely.

KANAYA: W works, yeah. Subverts the vampire dynamic etc etc.

TEREZI: UW.

VRISKA: B, possibly with some other colors thrown in at some point, but I don't think she's full-on Grixis-colored.

EQUIUS: WR or RG. Possibly Jund-colored but probably not.

GAMZEE: Straight B.

ERIDAN: Not decided yet, but I really like what they did with that Eridan card.

FEFERI: U, possibly with W thrown in.

If I may suggest something, maybe it would be better to create a wiki for organizing this. The forum here is great for discussing the ideas, but not for organizing the resulting cards. The way I see, there could be a main page, with the block, each set, and the cards for each of those sets. For each card, a page where the current version is shown (this has the advantage of preserving editing history).

Also: I know it may be too soon to think about this but... Wouldn't it be better to divide this Homestuck block in different sets, each part corresponding to some point of the story ? (the same way Wizards does with MtG). Maybe one set covering Acts 1-4, the second one covering Acts 5, and so on.

A wiki's a cool idea, but let's work through the concept a bit first. Also I've been up for twenty hours and am not in the frame of mind to think about making a wiki right now.

He flips back when someone plays a card with the word "Karkat" in the name.

Gamzee is black and gets +2/+2 as long as it has no pie counters on it.
