PESTERCHUM 3.41: Updated Pesterchum! New Thread!

Okay, so I downloaded pesterchum 6.0. It downloaded fine and I was able to open it fine and make a handle for myself. But it will continuously ask if I want to quit or dump me off saying my handle is already taken and I have to log back in.

That, and whenever someone tries to pester me they say I appear offline when I am not.
No one is receiving my pesters nor I theirs.

And when I go to client and want to hit 'random encounter' it's in gray and doesn't do anything.

I'm new to the whole program, and have no clue what I'm doing wrong or how to fix it. I understand lots of people are having different problems, so I'm chill with waiting for a solution, though it's much appreciated if anyone can help. >w<

Not sure about most of this, but as for the offline-when-not thing, I noticed that when you pick things like chummy or pranky, there is always a button that makes you appear offline. It is called different things in different themes, such as abscond. For me, the way to know what mood thingy you're set on, and to make sure I'm not set offline, I pester an offline friend and then click all the buttons. It'll say in the pester window what mood you're on. This'll work with online friends as well, but it's easier to not have to explain what you're doing.

To everyone having problems with Pesterchum not opening at all:
I was having the same exact problem. I spoke with Ghost Dunk and we went over everything in the folders. Turns out, one of the javascripts for my chumhandle profiles came up blank in notepad once opened. After deleting that profile from all folders containing it, I was able to open Pesterchum no problem. See if it works for you!

Hi! I'm actually having problems with the download...actually much so less getting Trollian with Pesterchum. I have successfully downloaded and installed Pesterchum just fine and I even followed the directions posted in the first post on this thread telling me what to do after I download the file. But the second download link would tell me that it couldn't find Pesterchum and refused to complete the download not to mention I'm missing the "Themes" options from the program. If anyone could help me out that would be radical!

I looked in all said files, none of them were blank and it still wouldn't open... I've been messing on and off with this for weeks and quite frankly I'm done with this.

So...I've normally had no problems with Pesterchum before. I deleted the Javascript pages and I still have problems logging in and with lag, which normally logs me back out.

I've tried re-downloading it, which then takes hours to do. Which, I have no clue if that's my internet or not, normally it never does this. And it seems like it will de-download. It'll be downloaded maybe...7MB and then it'll decrease. I don't know what's happening.

If someone could assist me, that'd be great.

I get lag like everyone does but that isn't my problem. My problem is that sometimes when I close out of pesterchum, like completely close the program, abscond, all of that, due to lag and then go to start the program back up, it'll say my handle is taken and i'll have to log into one of my others. Is anyone else having the problem?

It's kind of hard to explain abbreviated, but what you're looking for is in your Pesterchum file folder, there's a folder called pesterchumdata. In there, you'll find a profiles folder. In THAT folder, there are multiple javascript (.js) files that correspond to each of your profiles. Try opening up those files in Notepad or a similar program. If it pops up with some random mumbo jumbo, you're good. If it comes up blank, delete it. That's what I did. As for people still having the same problem after trying this...I can't help you. This is just how it worked for me.

I'm having problems as well with Pesterchum, and tried Dave-Sprite's advice. It still didn't work for me.
Here's what's happening:
-everyone always appears offline
-I can message, but they do not receive the message
-I can't access "userlist" or nearly anything else that opens another window in the "client" section. (besides 'options.' That works fine.)
-continuously attempts to 'reconnect' even though I don't believe I'm connected initially.

My chumhandle is the same as my username here: aloofPhilomath.

okay! so, i tried installing pesterchum again, and it still wouldn't open. since i couldn't create a profile, i don't think that solution will work. does anyone know how to fix it?

Okay, Dave-sprite, where exactly is the location of the python scripts? I searched all over the Pesterchum folder for them, and the only ones that came up were for the themes.

Oh, and the icon for the program is gone...

Well, I figured my issue out after reading through some of these posts. I tried to move my profiles over from an earlier update and ended up botching things up. Completely deleting the pesterchum.js file from the Users/USERNAME/AppData/Local/pesterchum folder solved the problem.

As it turned out, my .js file was from the older version and still had my chumhandle defaulted to a profile I no longer used and had previously deleted. It seems that I failed to default my new profile before quitting the program, and it stopped working ever since.

Anyway, hope that helps. I don't recommend randomly deleting files, though. Always make a copy of something before you decide to wipe it out of existence.

Oh, it happened again. If you're prone to editing/changing/making new profiles and deleting old/existing ones, this is likely to happen to you. If you delete the first profile you create (bottom of the list/default), you'll get this error again, as the .js file doesn't recognize that the default has be removed or updated. You need to make sure you manually update your default every time, I think, in order to prevent this. If it happens again, just go into the .js file and change the default profile over to the one you want. I think that may make it work. I haven't actually tested it, though.

So, every one of my chums is showing up offline no matter what I do and I know they're not all offline. I'm talking to some of them and they're even saying they're on.
And they're also saying I'm showing up offline no matter what mood I change my PC too.

Random Encounter and Receive Random Encounters are both grayed out, too, I've noticed.

OKAY SO:
my pesterchum client is popping up error 10061. why is this

i know that about three months ago, there was a question about the 10061 error. that's all cool and GD's servers are fine. I know this because my brother is on pesterchum not on one, but two machines. what is the issue? it's been like this for weeks!!

A request for future versions of Pesterchum: it would be nice if clicking no to a memo invite didn't shut down Pesterchum completely, as I've actually had someone invite spam me in an attempt to force me to go to a memo.

Hi to the developers and tech-heads reading this! I love Pesterchum and have a great time using it, but I've run into quite the predicament! Pesterchum ran fine the first few times I ran it, but it suddenly ceased operation when I tried to load it this evening. It simply begins to load then stops. I've re-downloaded it without success. I've also tried to run the debug but it won't run either.

Also, going to my %LOCALAPPDATA% only reveals two folders called Local and LocalLow, both of which are filled with nothing but empty folders with random names. (Doing a malware scan right now to be safe.) I'm not sure if I deleted something bad or what, but no solutions seem to be working.

I've tried to delete my profile like suggested, but I don't even have the Pesterchum.JS file or any folders besides quirks, smilies, and themes. If anyone could offer me help (I've looked through the thread but I didn't find the solution to the problem. I have to admit that my search wasn't the most thorough though) then I would be grateful!

Also: This happened once when I tried to run the debug. I'm not sure what I did to make it run differently this time, but it happened. It doesn't happen when I try to run the debug now b/c it simply stops loading, but I thought I should add this.

My problem is an issue with Python. This appears to be a common problem with a lot of people. When I click on the Pesterchum application icon, the mouse's hourglass symbol appears for a second and then disappears. The application never opens. When I try to open the debug file, a window appears with the text "Error loading Python DLL: python26.dll (error code 126)".
Others on this forum with the same issue have reported that reinstalling and getting the latest version of Python doesn't work. Has anyone found a solution yet?

Edit: A simple system restore/reinstall seems to have done the job, but I still have a load of leftover pesterchum files from reinstalling. Try a system restore and reinstall Pesterchum and try to run it. It seems to work. Thank you for reading this. : )

Also, is it safe to delete these leftover Pesterchum files?

The AppData folder is different than the folder Pesterchum's installed in. Smileys/Themes/etc. should be in the Pesterchum installation folder, which is defaulted to the C Drive. When you type in %LocalAppData%, you need to scroll down to the pesterchum folder there. You won't find the .js files in the installation folder.

I wouldn't recommend deleting random files, as noted earlier, but in Pesterchum's Local AppData folder, will basically looks like this:
...Local/pesterchum
Folder: logs
> Folder: [profile] -- (only appears if you have a profile you've pestered with; otherwise, nothing there)
> chums.js
> groups.js
Folder: profiles
> [profile].js -- (same as above; only appears if you have created a pesterchum profile; will have as many as you've made)
Folder: quirks
pesterchum.js

I kept my old pesterlogs but deleted everything else to start anew.

On another note, I've accidentally opened multiple instances of Pesterchum at the same time, and the program doesn't recognize there's already a copy of it running. This leads to forcing you to signing into a new profile, and, ultimately, allows you to be multiple people at a time. Is this intentional?

NickServ-wise, is there any option for synching or linking profiles to the same account?

There isn't an app for iOS users yet. However, you can always connect to the server via an IRC client.
