I think that in addition to overspecialization, the metalbending police are trained specifically to fall back on their metalbending instead of regular earthbending whenever possible - probably to avoid collateral damage, as they operate entirely within the city, and they can't risk damaging the infrastructure. You'll notice that when Lin finally DOES break out her earthbending, it's very compact, and she doesn't actually move much earth. It's the same as when they fought the platinumechs - the ground there was made of bendable earth, but the police instinctively went for their metal whips.

Another thing that we as the audience often take for granted is that the people in the show can't SEE airbending.. For us, it's stylized as swirling vortices and what have you, but for the characters, the air is invisible no matter what's being done with it. So in addition to being unfamiliar with airbending in the first place, the chiblockers couldn't have told what was coming at them until they got bowled over.

Are we really so sure about that? I mean, that wouldn't be one of the most unrealistic aspects of the show. After all, fire does not work in the way that pro-bending seems to show it as working. Getting knocked over by fire? Fire doesn't have mass (though I suppose that can be handwaved by its chakra fuel being heavy or something like that). Convection also doesn't seem to be functioning, and most clothes seem to be fireproof as well.

EDIT: This episode really makes me want Katara to come out and kick some ass. Come on, she's actually still alive! Judging by Hama's competency, I don't think age will hold her back too much.

EDIT2: I wonder why Toph didn't take her students out to relearn earthbending from its very basics, with the badgermoles. After all, her earthbending is based on an entirely different martial arts style.

maybe her first few but are you going to go bother a bunch of blind badgers in a cavern to teach some runts how to do things right?

    fuck no.

cave the wussies in and let the strongest survive.

how she lost her first police recruits.

Remember that in the episode introducing Toph, the Earth Rumble tournament officials were sure that Toph had taken a dive by throwing herself out of the ring, when Aang had clearly blown her away with a blast of air.

Well, Toph throwing herself out of the ring was easier to believe than her being blown away by a member of a race that's been extinct for a hundred years who just happened to be fighting in an underground earthbending tournament.

It's weird but i think i would be happy if book 2 was primarily character interaction with a lighter plot.

edit: do not think this has been posted yet.

I was pretty sure that in most cases, Airbending was unseen. We just got visuals because otherwise we'd see Aang move his hands and suddenly things would move everywhere. And that would be really confusing. Maybe the Air Scooters and stuff, but the single blasts of air? Probably not visible.

...Agreed on that point, I guess. You can't actually see air move, after all; just the objects that it's moving.

Also, I got around to watching the most recent episode recently. I can see why people were freaking out over Iroh's voice actor; I guess he's the same guy who did Zuko, right?

That being said, we got to see Lin being awesome and...

...Well, the last two episodes should be interesting, no?

Huh, that season finale preview seems to lend more support to Amon's chi-blocking/fake energy-bending thing being reversable.

EDIT: Also, Iroh II is Zuko's grandson, from the mouth of Bryan himself.

Well, that was funny as shit. 'Bad-Jokes Amon' is a thing now, isn't it?

    Ah-hahahahahaha...

Also, did anyone else catch the reference to 'The Producers' in that video?

Oh, it's been a thing for some time now. Just search for "Bad Joke Amon" or "Comedy Amon".

So guess who else Steve Blum voices?

"I am an Equalist. I bring equality to the people by removing bending. My title is ironic, in that I equalize by placing myself in higher power than the opposing side."

PSSST: It's the secret agents from Psychonauts. This is now how all chi-blockers talk in my headcanon.

This is absolutely perfect for the equalists as a shady organization made mostly up of faceless mooks. "I am an Equalist, this is my chi-blocking glove." "My glove is fake... I'm worried the other equalists are gonna make fun of me." "Shhh... Don't broadcast that fact. They look real."

Don't worry, I've laughed at terrible things sometimes.

Mostly because that seems to be what I do when confronted with truly insane crap.

Also, that hobo from the previews is truly is a noble soul.

Wait, is that the Cabbagecorp guy?!

If it is, then that makes that preview even better.

Also, note how hostile and generally negative Asami is in those previews. She is not happy about how much time Mako is spending with Korra.
