Totally right. With a few gold gems in the shit pile that is children's television shows, I'm feeling inclined to believe it. Can you imagine how watered down/crap-ified Homestuck would have to have been if Andrew Hussie wanted to make a TV show without the Network people and the FCC breathing down his neck?

The constant character death alone would force it to be an anime if nothing else. Even adult cartoons that run in syndicated USA only use death as a one-off joke, not as a real thing.

But then if it was an anime, I just know that whatever Japanese company that airs it wouldn't portray the characters right (I.E. over-sexualizing the female characters by and making the male ones more effeminate than the really are...)

Indeed, quite the conundrum we have here. Now that I think about it, what known animation studio would be qualified to make an actual Homestuck cartoon/show/anime/TV thing without butchering it one way or another?

Homestuck would not translate well to another medium, regardless of who did it or how hard they tried. Much of what makes Homestuck unique and interesting is how it uses the webcomic format, it would be inevitably dry by comparison if turned into a television show.

There's a reason the Homestuck video game will be new content.

its quality comes entirely from its format and how it presents itself, ways that cannot transition to other forms of media without it being almost entirely changed

that's why the Homestuck video game isn't an adaptation of the series, it would be fucking ridiculous

As for Online Cartoon Series... Has anybody else seen "Mob Squad" yet? One of my fav shows around right now. It follows around a group of Minecraft Mobs as they figure out how to deal with this "evil monster" that is the Player (Steve?).

Yes... its every single character as humans, in a high school, with high school drama. Why do I feel that a planetary-scale flamewar is going to erupt...

TBH I think people's minds are being clouded by the high school aspect. Personally I just graduated from high school a couple years ago and it honestly was not that bad, and any drama that did erupt was forgettable at worst and character building at best.

If people just stopped taking things at face value and actually took some time to think about how something could be positive then things would be a lot smoother IMO. I mean, it works for me, anyway. Anger only leads to more anger, so just don't get angry and don't let hype cloud your judgement.

mmmm, bump on Amazing World of Gumball, though.

While the writing is hit-or miss and there's far too much screaming and slapstick imo, the animation is where it's at. The environments are highly detailed, the characters have an absurd level of personalized body language in their movements, and they make tasteful use of cinematic tricks that you don't see often enough in cartoons (eg the Dolly Zoom). The sheer level of life that the animators breathe into those characters is hypnotic. I'm also always floored when they manage to blend so many styles and formats as seamlessly as they do, like shadows being cast by 2d characters on a 3d rendered backdrop.

Plus, with every pound of screaming slapstick drivel you get a dash of dark humor. It seems like one of those cartoons that today's youth will look back on in 10 to 15 years through nostalgia goggles and end up droppingtheir jaws at the innuendo just like we do when we rewatch, say, Dexter's Lab.

Also while I'm at it, Robotomy needs some well-deserved love for the same kinds of reasons. It really didn't get the love it deserved. (And I'm worried that Gumball may go that same route once their current order of episodes is exhausted.)

I'm gonna get yelled at here, I know it, but DAMN. The Amazing World of GOD DAMN Gumball is to me, the epitome of "LOLSORANDUM" cartoons. In terms of my personal shitlist, it's up there with Annoying Orange. The backgrounds aren't detailed, they're literally just pictures of real-world stuff for the most part. The titular gumball is uninteresting and whiny, his buddy the fish is just as bad, but in different ways. While Gumball is a spoiled fuck, fishman is just captain optimism. Dude never shuts up either.

The artstyle is incredibly ugly and inconsistent. Most characters are the same simple 2D Flash things you see in shit like Johnny Test, but then we get his monkey-ass teacher lady who for some reason is fully 3D. WHY? It just cheapens the whole thing for me. The characters in Gumball are also no more expressive than those in any other cheap flash cartoon,

Did you ever think for a second that the art style was inconsistent on purpose?

Because that's totally the case. All of the characters were taken from different commercials and other works that the creators had worked on in the past, and since they didn't limit themselves to one medium in that regard you end up with a wide variety of animation styles. This is also probably why they're in a real world setting: No one cartoon world would be able to properly hold all of these types of characters.

As for your other complaints, those are personal complaints so I can't really touch them, but how in the everloving crap is Gumball spoiled? I would call him idiotic, childish, and prone to drama, but spoiled? I really just can't see it.

Gumball's art direction is really cool and appealing but the lolstupid writing just kills it and makes it pretty much unwatchable to me

I really like Gumball, my mom and I find it really funny and the art style is appealing. Everything just melds together.

I don't have any cartoons I really dislike, but I never got the appeal of Phineas and Ferb. I mean it's not bad, but it's not that great. Were people just excited that Disney Channel was making cartoons again?

I haven't seen much gumball, but I really do like the art style. Pretty much everything there is to say about it has already been said. Despite the mashup of harshly contrasting media, it really looks nice. A few of the episodes I saw were okay, but the writing in general just needs to stray away from archetypal cartoon content.

Um, I'd also like to note that there are some great shows set in the high-school setting, such as Filmore! or The Weekenders. As for Teen Drama...well, I understand how it would be frustrating to some people, especially looking back and realizing how vapid some of that stuff was, but I figure that you could spin some great stories even out of that sort of thing (mainly of the 'Coming of Age' variety).

also phineas and ferb is pretty funny and well-written

actually i'd say that generally, animation is higher quality than it was five years ago or so. you just have to look at the good stuff (most of which turns out to be on Cartoon Network, surprisingly, although they love to cancel good shows)
