kmsumrall had the amazing idea of making a homestuck-themed tarot deck. This is the thread for it
Feel free to contribute! The more, the merrier.
Here`s what we have so far:
The ones I've drawn so far are pretty much scattered across the thread, so if you read it you'll bump into them eventually. Alternatively, you can see all of them in my Deviantart page
Also, some considerations:
If somebody is already representing one arcana, and you want them on another Arcana, then fill the hole they leave behind.
I know, I know, Rose is absolutely perfect for the snooty princess card (hypothetical example) but it just so happens that she's also perfect for another 3 of the Major Arcana. So if you want her to be on the slash fic writer (hypothetical example) card, you should find some snooty princess to fill the other one
It would be pretty sweet to have some more artists join us, so far there's just me! But for the sake of building a visual identity, it would be cool if it were someone who can draw in a style similar to the one the other cards are in. It's pretty easy, and loads of fun! Lots of paint bucket tool involved. If you're intrested, draw a card and show it to me (don't worry,I don't bite)

Reason: p
And here is the first of my cards. I decided to start with wands instead of starting with the Major arcana. The reason being, many people k ow the major, but not the pip or minor arcana.
Wands: fire
Aries, Leo, Sagittarius.
Spring.
Ace of Wands: Rearing to Go
Aradia Horn, below it is a lillypad.
While not strictly a wand, but works well in this setting. The Ace of Wands is about new life, and Aradia had a good amount of that in death and rebirth.
Upright: New life. Energy, birth. The power of inspiration. A turning point with new experiences and fresh idea. New beginnings. Forward looking. Inspiration leading to innovation and invention. Confidence and optimism. An upsurge in creativity leads to drive and growth. Good news.
Reversed: Can't get going. Unfulfilled promises and thwarted growth. Dashed hopes and delays lead to difficulties and trouble getting started. False starts and abortive attempts. Cancellations leading to wasted energy. Frustration and misdirected force. Selfishness. Lack of motivation or initiative. Unproductiveness. Poor planning and false hope. Futility.
Two of Wands: Opportunity
Aradia looking at the frog ruins, holding Lil Cal's head in her hand. We are looking over her shoulder, we cannot see her face or expression.
Upright: A good start. A period of waiting. The need to wait to see how matters will develop. Not much actively happening. A cooperative venture with sincere effort. Completion of the first stage a project. Faith in the future. Ambition leads to achievement and pride. A joint creative endeavor with energetic involvement. Growth and initiative. Unfulfilled potential.
Reversed: Anticlimax. Delays. Losing interest. Partnership difficulties. Bad news. Lack of activity. Going the wrong way. Feeling overwhelmed or disillusioned making one unable to marshal energies. Potentials not realized. Disagreements and failed negotiations. Self-doubt. Excessive pride.
Three of Wands: Birth of an Enterprise / Start of the Game
Aradia looking across an open plain, with a few hives of the player Trolls visible. She is framed on either side by the red and blue Frog Temples. Her horns shine with an eerie glow. We still are looking at her back, not seeing her face or expression. The sky is dotted with bright lights. Stars or meteors? We do not know.*
Upright: cooperation is happening. Things have gone well, trolls are working together, getting in the game. While the teams have been set up, there is a sense of togetherness, the initial success of the project. Plans are being put into action. Goals are being set for the future. While this step was good, there is more yet to be done. Things, for the most part, are looking good.*
Reversed: Lack of cooperation. There is overconfidence, too much focus on self. More delays, more setbacks, more misinformation and stubbornness. Alliances have been made, but are unhelpful and coerced. There is timidity and failure. The plans are unrealistic.*
I really liked the explanation for Aradia's horn, but I think the Science Wand would make more visual sense.
Also, could you please explain some basics of Tarot cards?
I really liked the explanation for Aradia's horn, but I think the Science Wand would make more visual sense.
Also, could you please explain some basics of Tarot cards?
The science wand seems to make more sense, but the wands are more about the person and what they see than the wand itself. Most of the cards are like that. Wands, swords, cups, pentacles... These are framing devices. The Science wand... It could work, but it distracts from the person. Besides, Aradia matches the fire sign and the zodiac of Wands. I guess I'm also going for Symboliclly satisfying, instead of visually satisfying, but in tarot, as my Mother says, your mileage may vary.
Tarot cards are used help with understanding. It's not so much about predicting the future, but giving insight to self and motivations. It helps in understanding the yourself and the situation around you to give you a better overall picture. it is about personal development and growth.
Cards do not have flat or static meanings. They have symbols and representions. They change based on the reader, the person being read, and the situation being read about. Differnt layouts help focus. There are general meanings, but like I said, they can change.
Edit: wulf. Thinking deeply about this can take energy out of you. Time for a break. More wands later, Swords is after that.
I think I just got everything said, feel free to ask more.
Thanks for explaining! I get it now xD
may I make a template-type thing for the cards?
Just a blank card with a nice border thing and space to put the name of the card in it. Also maybe somewhere to put the numbers?
Major Arcana as has been decided up to the current point: (This post will be edited routinely as things are discussed.)
0 - The Fool: John, the unyeilding optimist just starting his journey. I - The Magician: Gamzee II - The High Priestess: Nepeta, who attempts to maintain a positive attitude amongst allies. Plus, she has a shipping wall. III - The Empress: Kanya, who has a number of Motherhood motifs, including being what is essentially the surrogate mother of the Mother Grub. IV - The Emperor: Equis, who is STRONG and MANLY and such. V - The Hierophant: Karkat/The Sufferer/Signless VI - The Lovers: Mom Lalonde and Dad Egbert. VII - The Chariot: Dave, keeping in line with both his Faults and Strengths. VIII - Strength: Jade, who is both patient and kind. Usually. IX - The Hermit: X - The Wheel of Fortune: Vriska is a shoo-in for this, being obsessed with luck to the point of crippling reliance. XI - Justice: Terezi is another shoo-in, having a heavy obsession with balance and justice. XII - The Hanged Man: Tarvos, who constantly undergoes misfortune yet seems to shrug it off in his quest for self-confidence, and often gives up. XIII - Death: Aradia, who dies and is reborn anew, actually fits the motif of the Death Arcana. XIV - Temperance:Undecided. Maybe Roxy or Dirk. XV - The Devil: Doc Scratch. XVI - The Tower: Sollux, who constantly predicts Doom and Tragedy. XVII - The Star: Feferi and Eridan, who are both Hopeful and Hopeless respectively. XVIII - The Moon: Rose, who is deceived and loses her path. XIX - The Sun: PM. XX - Judgement: The Beat Mesa, which represents finality. XXI - The World: Bilious Slick, obviously.

And as for Minor Arcana...It's been a long time since I worked with the cards, and I've forgotten most of the specific meanings of each Minor Arcana card. Although I could, being reminded which one is which, probably come up with a good design for each one.
Although, truthfully it's usually better, IMO, to just roll with a simple image for the Minor Arcana. Otherwise things will get pretty hectic.

I've actually been thinking heavily about this (mostly because of the forum game I'm running right now that has heavy tarot motifs). Having prior experience with the Wight-Rider deck, I actually started working on something like that. At least, design of it. I can't draw for shit.
So, I came up with a number of the Major Arcana representations.
0 - The Fool: John, the unyeilding optimist just starting his journey. I - The Magician: Eridan, who is confident in his own skills to the point that he ignores outside suggestions. II - The High Priestess: Nepeta, who attempts to maintain a positive attitude amongst allies. Plus, she has a shipping wall. III - The Empress: Kanya, who has a number of Motherhood motifs, including being what is essentially the surrogate mother of the Mother Grub. IV - The Emperor: Equis, who is STRONG and MANLY and such. V - The Hierophant VI - The Lovers: Mom Lalonde and Dad Egbert. VII - The Chariot: Dave, keeping in line with both his Faults and Strengths. VIII - Strength: Jade, who is both patient and kind. Usually. IX - The Hermit: Perhaps WV. X - The Wheel of Fortune: Vriska is a shoo-in for this, being obsessed with luck to the point of crippling reliance. XI - Justice: Terezi is another shoo-in, having a heavy obsession with balance and justice. XIX - The Sun XX - Judgement: The Beat Mesa, which represents finality. XXI - The World: Bilious Slick, obviously.
Couldn't think of everything, though.
This is neat. I will certainly, keep this in mind once I get to the major aracana. I suspect we will agree on much of it. Part of my goal is to also inform why the card can mean what it means.
I know a bit about tarot and have many nice resources to help me out, if needed. Including a friend of mine who is so in tune she has trouble not read playing cards.
There is a good chance I might be putting too much thought into this, but I would feel bad if I didnot give it justice.
Ok, starting again. I am trying to give a bit more detail, hopefully make what I am getting at a bit more clear. Well, as clear as symbology can be. As always, please ask if you have any questions or think I should take a different line of thought.
Four of Wands: Haven of Refuge
I found a much better card for the lilypad about to open the door scene. I will revist the 4 of wands later.
Five of Wands: A Mock Battle
Homestuck doesnt really have a good scene to work into this idea. A mock battle? Healthy competition? What competition, male bonding, *rivalry style things does homestuck have? The best I have is bro vs Dave, but that breaks the theme of Wands. I have given two images in this case.*
The first is 3 bros and 2 Daves, each with a sword. They are fighting, ala the rooftop battle.*
The other image is a compound one. A flarp time, with The Scourge Sister and Team Charge and Eridan. Eridan is fighting Tavros and Vriska. vriska is also fighting Terezi. Terzi is also fighting Aradia. Aradia is also fighting Eridan.*
Upright: An exciting challenge. Struggle and rivalry, this is a healthy competition. It's about physical activity and war games and building bonds. It deals with minor irritations and nuisances, annoying details and unexpected problems. Hormones are acting up, and sometimes things get bigger than expected, too many irons in the fire. It is about the strife. The early Flarp days are suggested, between the two teams and Eridan, we not as cutthroat, and how the competition was used to build up trust between the Sisters and Charge.*
Reserved: It is about squabbles, but also relief after conflict. It can have positive and negative meanings in this sense as well. It can mean the end of squabbles and pettiness, the struggle is over. The end of strife. However, it also deals in ones lack of abilities to compete and the use of unfair tactics. The competition is unhealthy, leading too more stress, more malice. There is a sense of being overwhelmed. This is shown through the relationship between Vriska and Tavros.*
Six of Wands: Victory
This shows the lilypad scene just before Jack attacks. This shows Victory, pure and simple. The Black kKing is dead, Srgrub has finished, they are prepared for the ultimate reward. Hooray, hoorah, the day is won. One Aradia stands on the platform with the rest, while 5 others float around in the background.*
Upright: The likelihood of success. Upright, it is a happy card. Triumphant. Accomplishment and acclaim has been won, this is reward. Wise decisions have been made, and there is vindication for even the bad ones. You are getting recognized for a job well done.*
Reversed: Victory eludes you. Defeat. You did not win. There is failure, loss. Your rival has won, the other side got more points. Things were communicated wrong, and other communication was misunderstood. You weren't up to the challenge. You werent important.
Seven of Wands: Holding Firm
God Tier Aradia standing firm against Jack, who is about to attack. Seven broken chains of Derse hang behind her. She stands in the middle, taking up most of the card, a look of confidence in the face of danger. Jack appears small, but still a force to be reckoned with. She stands her ground, ready to take on her attacker.*
Upright: Taking a stand, struggling to stay on top. There is courage, and strength in adversity. Self-confidence allows one to hold the superior position. Steadfast and assertive. There is conflict and struggle, but inner strength allows for successful coping. Against all odds, there is sheer determination that gives one a great sense of purpose. Despite everything, you have an advantage.*
Reversed: Feeling daunted. Vulnerable and overwhelmed, things do not go so well. Anxiety over a decision and fear of rejection tie into cowardliness and running away. Passivity, uncertainty, lack of confidence. The battle could be lost. Opportunities have been missed.*
Eight of Wands: Speed
8 RoboAradias zooming in one direction. It's not clear if the are getting to someplace, getting away from someplace, or just flying around really fast. What you are getting is that they are doing very, very fast. The expressions are a mix of angry, blank, confident, and happy.*
Upright: Going forward. Swift action and quick results. Things are moving at a fast pace, quickly. There is excitement and acceleration. New ideas are broadening the mind with new experiences. A journey is happening, the end is here or near. Communication is going forward, leading to new friends and rushes of creative inspiration.*
Reversed: Wasted energy. There is took much speed, things are moving too quickly. Impulsiveness and insecurity lead to a lack of control. Hassles and fights break out, miscommunication and upsetting news make plans and trips delayed. Plans don't work out. Dismissal of a thing and expulsion of people.*
Nine of Wands: Strength in Reserve
9 RoboAradias standing between the Black King and the other trolls. This is a more defensive card, about holding back to protect. The RoboAradias here are not to fight the Black King directly, but to hold back it's psychic scream to allow the other trolls to attack without that fear. The are protectors, not aggressors.*
Upright: Stand you ground, being defensive. Guarding oneself against attacks on old wounds, having a resistance against everything, be it illness or infection. Determination and perseverance are key. It's about not changing something if it works, but holding firm. A strong constitution is important.*
Reversed: Defenses are down, and caught off guard. Weakness, cowardice, illness, injury, carelessness, impracticality. These all tie into a loss of rights and inadequate defenses. Suspicion leads to over defensiveness. A fear of looking weak or helpless. Unrealistic plans in the face of adversity lead to feeling overwhelmed. Lack of preparation and an untenable position. Obstinacy and inflexibility. Poor health.*
Ten of Wands: The Weight of Ambition*
Tens are about finality, the end of a cycle. Homestuck, still ongoing, is harder to show this concept. I attempt to us key points of arc ends for this.*
This shows Godtier Aradia, sitting. Around her is dreambubbles, deadRoboAradias. The bubbles have flashes of doomed timelines. There is a green tint to everything as it is set near the green sun.*
Upright: The burdens of success. Work related stress. There is an overload, full responsibility for everything, buried in work. Pressure, overextension. Excessive overtime. Taking on too much. Obsessive behavior, overtaxing oneself. More than one person can handle. Failure to achieve ambition.*
Reversed: The burden is lifted. This has both positive and negative aspects. Relief from stress and pressure. Shifting the load. Delegating correctly. But, there is also a misuse of talents, overweening ambition leading to overload, delays, and failure. Taking on others responsibilities, and work goes unrewarded. *Mistrust and unfair burdens. Being led astray is possible.*
If anyone has a good moment for 4 of Wands, Haven of Refuge, please let me know. Relating to Aradia is a plus.
I'd love to get in on this, though I'm mostly busy until the 7th.
May I recommend The Sufferer for Heirophant? Heirophant is generally heavily associated with religion and teaching; right side up it speaks of advice, friendship, assistance; upside down bad advice, lies, persecution. Interpretation tends towards being a good role model, doing the right thing. The Sun - Hmm, I'd think of God Tier Aradia off the top of my head. She's extremely happy, things have turned around for her, she's optimistic, enthusiastic, successfully overcoming whatever comes her way and confident in her abilities. Temperance - I can't take this card seriously right now. I just realized it's usually got some kind of liquid being poured into something else, and all I could think of was Karkat and buckets.
I'll admit I don't know most of the Tarot particularly well, really. I can google though, or drag out my mum's old sets.
I sorta think that Dave fits the Magician role more than Eridan who would actually be a good candidate for a reversed Star. On the other side, Jake is a very good candidate for Star for being unyieldingly optimistic (well from what little we've seen of him)
I'd say R??? Lalonde with Jane might be good for Temperance, but... hrm... there's too little seen of it.

But you wanna keep Joltijohn. So you trade Joltijohn to another game session.
You can now restart the old game. You still have Johnvee there to pick up again. He's the same but now he's different. He can live another life that's different from the original like turn him into Flarejohn.
You can also bring your old Joltijohn into your game too. You now how 2 Johns.
It looks like the minor Arcana is going to take a little while to sus out, so anyone who wants to suggest Major Aracana makes me happy.
Minor is a bit harder to do, because the cards can tell a story, or just be snapshots or different people in their life. For example, Wands focuses mainly around one person, whereas pentacles/cups/plates is about events. And I love it.
I really do love putting in the work for the much ignored Minor Arcana. The royal cards for wands should be up today or thenext day. I have much gifts to play with, so...
I'm just wondering, should we make the images in the mspaintadventure style, or a more detailed one like in some tarot cards?
And should the position of the character be similar to the original card or just any position?
Also, I can help with the pictures. I tried to make a card if XVII - The Star was feferi. I guess it turned out pretty good, but I should make some changes later...
What do you think?

XIX - The Sun XX - Judgement: The Beat Mesa, which represents finality. XXI - The World: Bilious Slick, obviously.
Couldn't think of everything, though.
Why is Gamzee not there as Temperance?
Also, I just noticed how there is no Sun there, and I'm the Sun myself! We Sun types are being neglected in HS! <

I picked Aradia for Death Arcana because Death represents Renewal and Rebirth through Change. The fact that Aradia is obsessed with Death is just a bonus. Sufferer/Karkat as Hierophant is an excellent Idea, though.

Upon re-evaluation of the Magician Arcana's meanings, Dave does seem like he'd fit Magician slightly better than Eridan. To be quite frank, though, we could probably put both Eridan and Feferi on The Star and get away with it. One that represents Hope and one that represents Lack of it.
I'd support R??? Lalonde as Temperance, just because having a Drunk on the Temperance card is freaking hysterical.

This. Also, I'm working on a card outline, although if anyone else wants to do one, feel free, as I kinda am still getting used to the program I'm using.
Also, in the next day or two I plan on going through the full presentation design of each individual Major Arcana card.
kmsumrall, I was thinking we could use Spades Slick/Jack Noir as the theme for the Swords set of Minor Arcana.

If nobody minds, I was hoping to be the pointman on this, with final decision. Not to say I wouldn't be taking advice from everyone. If this seems a bit draconian, I can back down. Anyways, As for swords...
The zodiac signs for Swords is Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. That would be Sollux, Terezi, and Eridan. I was hoping to keep a theme of the trolls being in the minor Aracana. While Slick and the Midnight Crew make sense in terms of blades, Swords seems to be about the situations, and those three trolls fit really well into the meanings there. I will give it some serious thought.

Upright: Daring action. Vitality and good news. Courage, leadership, initiative. Enthusiasm and vigor help a dynamic event. New ideas are being purposed, with creative potential and inspiration. Athletic prowess. There is an opportunity for new growth.*
Reversed: Frazzled, there is bad news. Nay saying and quick dismissal lead to a broken heart. Negative attention seeking. Acting out, leading to scattered thinking and discouragement. There is arrogance, rumors, over-dramatization. Illness and obstacles.*
Knight of Wands: Escape from Difficulty
Nepeta is standing in front of her shipping wall, claws put in one hand, paintbrush out in the other. On her computer tablet shows the 4 kids. There is a dead animal on the floor, and the paintbrush is covered in that blood. Her expression is happy and expectant.*
Upright: Change is the air, creative energy is around. New people are around, new ideas and experiences come from them. Perpetual motion. Quick decisions. Not wanting to settle down. Challenge and ambition lead to more adventure. There is much charisma and energy, a sense of humor with excitement. Athletic activities. Optimism. Confidence and movement are abundant.*
Reversed: Impatience. Egotism. Indecision and instability lead to opportunism. Stress of rapid change. Lack of follow through. Foolish haste. Violence and argumentativeness. Aimlessness and recklessness lead to procrastination. Jealousy and frustration. Fickleness.*
Queen of Wands: Work Focused Woman
GodTier Aradia is sitting, surrounded by bubbles. In the bubbles are images of different characters, Each troll, and some images of RoboAradias. She is at the center, directing bubbles here and there, but also talking to her friends.*
Upright: Balanced family and career interests. Queen of hearth and home, this person has majesty and ambition. They are the center of attention, with competence and leadership ability. Versatility, tirelessness, and passion. Generosity and warmth, courage. The power of positive thinking.*
Reversed: The shadow side of Feminine. Egotism, narrow-mindedness. Jealousy, envy, moodiness. Lies and seduction. The end justifies the means. Interference. Untrustworthiness. Demandingness. Emotional blackmail.*
King of Wands: Leadership
(note: I am considering reversing the upright and reverse from the traditional meaning. It fits equius better. Please let me know what y'all think)
Equius is standing tall, offering a hand to the lower blood trolls. He thinks he is offering a more correct and right way of living, and truly believes in him ability to lead the others. There is a dreamy, hazy look to it.*
Upright: Enterprise. Leadership. Wit, charm, strength. Motivation and ambition, with decisiveness as well. Courage and enthusiasm, the love of a challenge. Loyal. Passion. A commanding presence. Encouragement and professionalism. Optimism.*
Manoo, since you are OP, can you link my Wands posts in the OP?

Personally, I'd rather see it kept as a mostly democratic effort, at the very least between manoo and contributors.

Shit.
Although I totally imagine Dave having an existiencial crisis about Mayo in that chat. He just stops and stares blankly into space for a minute, while Karkat just stares wondering what broke Dave. As he searches for the answers, what is Mayo. Is he mayo? What if the mayo was everything BUT mayo? And he's all. "I don't know." And can never trust mayo again Although he'll put WV in a sandwhich, just to see if he is mayo.

I'm terribly sorry.

Actually, Manoo started the thread while I was coming up with Wands Minor Arcana on my request, cause I never venture outside of comic discussion in the forum and wasn't sure where it would go, artboard or somewhere else. Democratic is cool, I was just thinking someone on point can help it so we don't have 8 or 9 differnt major arcana.
Edit: all the royal cards are going into one post
Wands are done! (expect 4 of wands). My iPad is about out of juice, so I am done for a while. I'll be back with swords later today or tomorrow. I said earlier what I am leaning towards, but if anyone wants to weigh in with thoughts and reasons, I will be happy to look them over.
R??? Lalonde as Temperence.
Absolutely. I support this 8^8%
Might I recommend spoilering the large first post in sections so as to make navigation cleaner and easier?

Yeah, that'd be a great idea to have the related trolls be the minor arcana, but I don't suppose it might also be a good idea to have the related kids be part of the minor Arcana as well?
Also for Court Cards, it's sorta late but I kinda thought that it might be a good idea to have various other characters be the Page, Knight, Queen or King, like Carapacians if possible.
You are the Chief of Doom in the Land of Steppe and Silence. Your chumHandle is absentmindedThinker. --you tend to think too much and sometimes you get a bit ahead of yourself-- (you now have a pesterchum)

You've got your Johnvee and evolved him into Joltijohn and you're like well shit fuck this ground gym leader can't beat him. Gotta restart
I was going to give the kids the Major Aracana, but thinking about it, they can fit into the royal cards as well. And, it's never to late to suggest a change. If you have ideas for the Court Cards, or integrating the kids into the minor (they appear slightly in wands, but are set pieces), let me know. The more perspectives I get, the better this can be.
