    BATTLE

The Flameslasher ravages the enemy without restraint, dealing 12 damage to the Crawl Mite!

The Crawl Mite is destroyed! It dropped 15 Pandorums!

The Sparkgazer slashes at the enemy with its orbiting fanblades, dealing 8 damage to the Miasmist Arcanoform! The Sparkgazer takes 4 damage!

The Miasmist Arcanoform fires a beam from its claw at the Flameslasher! The Flameslasher takes 5 damage!

    The Flameslasher is defeated!

And at this point, all that's left is to finish off the Arcanoform. Even if it keeps putting up static shields, all that does is slow down the fight. Without its lackeys, all it has left is a head-on confrontation with us, brute force versus brute force.

Othello swings at the Miasmist Arcanoform, dealing 13 damage!

The Sparkgazer slashes at the enemy with its orbiting fanblades, dealing 8 damage to the Miasmist Arcanoform!

The Miasmist Arcanoform fires a beam from its claw at Othello! Othello takes 4 damage!

It's getting desperate, or whatever the equivalent is for gameplay constructs. It wants to take me down, now, before it takes anyone else out. It knows that if I'm defeated, my entire party will fall away.

Two more turns, maybe. But I'm not giving him that many.

Othello swings at the Miasmist Arcanoform, dealing 13 damage!

The Miasmist Arcanoform is destroyed! It dropped 100 Pandorums!

Got 3 Water Energy, 2 Shock Energy, 1 Life Energy, 1 Protoform Unit!

    VICTORY

Six Hitpoints from defeat. But it turns out that in a brute force fight, even weakened, we could take it down. That's a huge windfall of energies, but I'm more concerned about legging it out of the Passage of Ways and getting myself to a healing node, fast. If another mob showed up- well, in this state, even a few Streamers could take me down.

So I do just that- leg it. The passage ends in a lavender portal, which I unhesitatingly leap into-

And find myself standing in a strange place, an area of pristine white tiling and multiple other wanderers who, by their looks, must be Players like me. They seem quite a bit better outfitted than I am, though. I don't recognize most of the furnishing, though I do pick up a heal from the healing node.

As I finish up and look around, a heavily armored warrior bearing a large sword strides over to me.

Hello to you, there. You seem to be new to the Dreambattle- just came out of the Passage, didya?

I'm not sure how to respond, but I shrug nonchalantly to the stranger.

    Just fought my way out.

Well, what's your name, lad? I'm Delchire, and I'm this Nexus's assigned Guide.

I'd learned about Guides, before. They were gatekeepers, guardians of a sort, responsible for educating those new to the full Dreambattle on its intricacies which couldn't be learned from texts and memory files. They were also the de facto authority in the area- at least, the most easily accessible one, as they could be called from anywhere as long as you were within their jurisdiction (which usually meant in the Nexus that they supervised).

I'm Othello. So, that means you're responsible for telling me about the area, right?

Yeah, that's me. Anything around the area interest you, you can ask me. I know most everything you'll need for the Dreambattle.

    Hmm.

So, is there anything I want to do or ask this guy?

First, make your last form. Water/Life/Water

Then, ask him if it's possible to return to the trials.

By the way, is it possible for you to do a tutorial on how you make your amazing sprites?

ask what the two nodes are, other then the healing and item.
also, i dunno about using the life or in fact making it at all right now. life could be INCREDIBLY rare so we would end up having just a very tiny amount of life in the mix and tons of water.

Yes, but we could also just have it sitting there in our inventory, doing nothing.

I'm curious about a few mechanical details, m'self - off the top of my head, max levels of things (not that it necessarily matters right now), existing Elements (why guess Life is rare when we can just ask) and Equipments (I'd guess hats and gloves, just from the peeps around here, but y'never know), and what the orange (item, but I'd hazard it's more storage than reward) and yellow (fiik, maybe a warp) nodes do.

Also, for what ulterior motive does the Dreambattle exist? (Sorry, genresavviness kicking in, I just gotta check)
    ...But it's probably just me.

I don't suppose it's possible for me to go back into the Passage? I'm not really sure I'm prepared for new areas.

Hah, newbies always say that. Well, to answer your question, you can't really go back into the Passage itself- don't want you helping some of your friends get out or anything- but the Passage is not a constant, and you can return to the biome that the Passage gave you. Which biome did you get?

Biome? You mean the Passage is different for different people?

Yeah, it can be any of the biomes you can portal to from this Nexus.

Well, I got a blue dungeon with a lot of sludge and flying monsters, with this big lightning-shooting boss at the end.

Ah, you got the Miasmist Caves. Explains your water-aligned equipment. Anything else you want to ask?

What are those two nodes- the one with two swirling things, and the green one?

The green one is the shop, which I believe should provide everything you'll need. It's got Protoforms, a few basic equipment items like swords, helms, and amulets that you can synthesize off of, and you can even buy energies, skills, and unit upgrades from there. As for the golden swirling one, that's the Alchemy Node. From there, you can fuse items together directly instead of imbuing them with energy.

And I'm guessing the Item Node is some sort of storage box?

That's right. It has unlimited space for you to store your extra energies and equipment.

Why would I need to do that? I mean, I can just carry everything, right?

That's not right at all. You can only carry up to TEN energies, TEN pieces of equipment, and FIVE summons on you at any time. If you go over the limit, you can choose which items you want to transportalize directly into your Storage.

...Then what happens if I want to upgrade something that needs more than 10 energies?

You'll have to come back here to do it. Fortunately, unlike the Passage, every region will have a node right at the entrance- and some may have nodes in other places, leading to other Nexii. As time goes on, it'll become more normal to return to the Nexus to upgrade rather than to upgrade during battle, if only because all your equipment and summons will require so many energies to upgrade that it's not possible to do it on the spot. Since there's no upper upgrade limit, the energy requirements can get absurd- I myself need about thirty energies per upgrade on average now!

So why should I carry energies with me in the first place, if they're so useless in the field?

Heh, I like how astute you are, kid! You should check out the store for your answer to that.

Also, for energies- how many are there, exactly? I've only seen a few of them, but I know that there's a lot of energy types. Are any of them rare?

    The Guide- Delchire- shrugs.

Nobody knows. Dozens upon dozens, at the least- we have access to eight or nine of them at this Nexus. I've heard rumors of some supremely powerful energies out there, dropped only by the strongest bosses that only spawn once in a few years- but that, frankly, is far out of the range of us both!

So, I have a Life Energy here. I'd think I want to get more of those- any ideas? Or are Life Energies one of the rarer ones for this Nexus?

You want Life Energy, I recommend you try out the Sky Ruin biome once you finish looking around. Sky Ruin drops mostly Gale and Life Energies.

...Well, I can't ask that! I can't just go up to an official and ask him 'hey what is the ulterior motive of the organization that supports you and the world around us', that would be ridiculously stupid. Common sense! I'll just ask something tangential to that, instead.

...So why is our world called the Dreambattle, anyways? I don't even really know what dreaming means.

Delchire looks at me, his expression inscrutable under the armored faceplate. After a dozen seconds, he speaks slowly and ponderously, as if thinking about his own answer even as he delivers it.

Why we call it the Dreambattle? Well, you've read the texts. The First Engineer came up with the design for this beautiful city in his dreams, so we call it the Dreambattle... But I'm not satisfied with that, and I don't think you are either, Othello.

    But then what?

...I was alive before the Dreambattle, Othello. Most people don't ask- they just take the Dreambattle as a fact of life, like it's always been here. In truth, it wasn't always here. Can you imagine life without the Eternal Pandora sustaining us, that miraculous source of near-infinite power? Can you imagine fighting not for joy but for food, for housing, for a simple place to live without rain pouring down on you every day?

...I couldn't imagine any such thing, but he continued.

Can you imagine living according to the whims of a burning ball of light in the sky, which extinguished itself every twelve hours, forcing you into a state of unconsciousness for that entire time? Can you imagine a society built around that fact? We weren't always like this, living in this near-paradise, without worrying about food or shelter or reality, with the Pandora providing for our bodily functions, keeping us awake and active to play the game.

It was obvious that Delchire cared about what he was saying deeply- that he'd probably given this some thought even before I'd shown up and asked him a question. And now, like a punctured reservoir, he was pouring out all his thoughts on the matter to me.

    So then, the Dreambattle is...

The Dreambattle. A Dream of Battle, I like to think of it- a human dream, the natural desire to struggle against adversity. There was so much chaos before the Pandora, Othello. People fought for brutal reasons, took the items of the other person simply because they wanted to. The Dreambattle satisfies the final hope of humans, I think- it lets us fight, but doesn't let us get hurt. All the good with none of the bad. Isn't that what we've always wanted...?

    He trails off.

...Anyways, anything else you want to ask, kid?

Should I ask him about anything else, or should I go browse the Shop or try out the Alchemy Node or just synthesize that Protoform Unit I have? I still can't decide if I want to spend my Life Energy or if I want to hang onto it for now.

Probably best to check out the shop and see what we can get before messing with upgrades and protoforms. Once we know what we have available to us, we can mess around with alchemy and energies and stuff.

I think about trying Alchemy out, but ultimately I decide to see what exactly I can purchase at the Shop before I go mixing any items or energies with each other.

    SHOP

    Equipment:

    Energies:

    Protoforms:

    Skills:

    Other:

...That is A WHOLE LOT OF SWEET LOOT I could get. No individual item is out of my price level, though some do look rather... Expensive. And there's apparently locked content- probably level-specific energies and skills that I have to fight my way through to use, apparently?

Shopping time! What do I pick up during my stay here?

    Re: Dreambattle

    Here's my outlined budget:

125 Pandorums for Steel Helmet, Iron Armor, and Iron Greaves -- a complete set of raw gear.
90 Pandorums for 6 Steel Energies -- this allows us to upgrade all of our new armor for a solid offense and a nigh-impenetrable defense.
40 Pandorums on a new Iron Sword -- my idea is that we can upgrade this with our existing Wind energy, and then combinate it with our current sord for doublepower.
20 Pandorums for a Water Energy -- assuming we use Water/Life for our Protoform, this'll give us the option for a Water/Water/Water upgrade.

With this set-up, we have a full set of brand new armor (which, in all likelihood, will have off-the-chart defenses), a sword that we can combine with our current sword, and a complete stable of summons of all elements. All for 275 Pandorums (within our budget).

    Yeah?

    EDIT:

Alternatively, here's a really absurd miniplan to doublecombinate our current armor:

    Iron Armor for 45 Pandorums
    Gear Protoform for 70 Pandorums
2 Steel Energies for 30 Pandorums
1 Water Energy for 20 Pandorums

Iron Armor + (1 Steel Energy + 1 Water Energy) makes Flux Armor, like we have now.
Protoform + (1 Wind Energy + 1 Steel Energy) makes Venix Greaves.
Venix Greaves + (3 Water Energies) makes Tempest Greaves like we have now.

And if we combinate 2 Flux Armors and 2 Tempest Greaves together, we might get some pretty crazy results armorwise.

It also leaves us 112 Pandorums for spending on other things, like swords, or energy for our summons protoform.

Just thought I'd throw this out there.

I personally REALLY want an aurum sword. Otherwise, I say we wait till we clear the Sky Ruins before buying anything else, so that we have access to extra life and wind energy.

It costs a load of cash and the Upgrade Energy requirements are absurd. It'd probably be nearly as effective and much cheaper to upgrade our existing Sword. ~_~

but it's super powerfull and cool looking! Plus, if we want, we can just combine it with our existing sword! Also, it's powerfull so as of right now we don't NEED to upgrade it. That's kinda the point of buying it over other stuff, we save rescources that in my opinion would be more usefull in creating minions and armour.

    Re: Dreambattle

I think, since we've Fire/Air and Metal/Electric already, and both Water and Life are in (relatively) decent supply, we ought to forge a Life/Water companion - judging from our armor, Water's HP-based, and I would hazard a guess that Life would give it healing powers, something we kinda sorta really need.

Glob Spit seems phenomenally useful, seeing as how crippling it was to us. I kinda want to save off on buying new things until we know how alchemy works, though.

I'll still put forward support for buying the Initiate Robes - the leggings aren't as useful to us yet, and probably aren't worth buying at all unless they apply the +slot to our companions as well. Typically you don't need that many special moves anyway.
    ...But it's probably just me.

I just realized that there are going to have to be limitations on combinating items somewhere -- either in money or restricted combinations. That's going to put a bit of a drag on any potential plans involving combinating equipment (like mine). Can we ask the Guide how combinating works before committing to any purchases?

    Re: Dreambattle

The initiate robes are a pretty big deal- having an extra party member slot is huge compared to any of the personal skills. The ones available clearly didn't kill us, so I doubt they'd be worth spending money on until we run into something that we'd specifically need it to fight. The robes are a full extra action, while sacrificing defense and other boosts. I say we buy it and see what we can do with alchemy. Will we be able to see the results of possible combinations before we commit to them? Imbuing the robes with Steel energies or combining them with our existing armor would be great, as long as we don't end up losing that summon slot in the process. I'd hold off on investing in straight upgrades until we know what we can accomplish with alchemy. The robes are a given, though- the extra summon slot is a huge deal. We should also pick up the Steel Helm- it'll shore up our defenses without any tradeoffs, since it's an equipment type we currently don't have.

    277
    -160 for Initiate Robes
    -40 for Steel Helm

77 Pandorums remain. We don't really have the scratch to really experiment with the combinatorial stuff right now- we should go clear another area before we buy base armors and energies to experiment with. So yeah, we should ask the guide how alchemy works and see how costly the whole enterprise is. It's unlikely that the possible benefits of alchemy would really outweigh the benefits of having four summons. Speaking of which- seconding water/life for our available protoform.

We should then drop some energies on the helm- water water for some extra health. Speaking of health- Zero, the 100 pandorum health upgrade is severely overpriced, considering that you can by +1 defense for exactly the same price. You should probably either increase the health bonus or drop the price significantly for that upgrade, otherwise there's no sense in buying it over +defense.

Oh, and congrats on escaping the Cradle, dude.

I say buy the initiate robes, upgrade one of our stats (probably defence), and make that water-life familiar.
And maybe try out fusing our armours together since we'll then have three different ones.

Right now, we can increase our defense by twice as much for 60 Pandorums fewer- by buying the Steel Helm. Trying out alchemy is a pretty good idea, depending on how it works, and then we should ask the Guide about the different areas.

    Re: Dreambattle

I am sort of curious why improving our base stats is so expensive compared to the bonus given by armors - although I would imagine after a while we'd sort of stop needing to buy armor if we can just get enough Energies from drops... See, this is why we need to see what the hell is up with Alchemy before buying anything. If we can buy it, there's a decent chance we can just make it and save our money for more expensive things like stat boosts or the Aurum Sword.
