Re: Recursion of Fate[TEXT] (Everyone: Be surprised)

    >Scene: Skip forward.

Liz buries her face into your shoulder as a fresh round of tears stream down her cheeks. This is not the gentle sobbing of a hurt little girl, something you and she have dealt with in the past. This is the wailing of one lost in a maelstrom of despair, sorrow, and regret. It isn't pretty and tragic, like one of the stories that she gets you to read every now and again. There are tears. There is spit. There is snot. A few minutes ago there was vomit, and you mentally chide yourself for being thankful she's gotten that out of her system.

You suddenly feel helpless again. There is nothing you can do for her. Nothing but sit here and wait out the storm. You stroke her hair gently and whisper soothing words. She babbles incoherently into your shoulder, her despair removing almost all meaning from the words.

Oh. Oh dear. I'm afraid there's been something of an error. You probably didn't want to go this far, did you?

Hold on, I'll see if I can find the problem. Geez, this is more embarressing than the whole Victoria fiasco a little while back.

    <== Story: Skip backwards.

Alright, even on 8x speed this is going to take a while. We went waaaay to far.

Maybe you could talk with someone for a bit?

    >Amaterasu: We would like to see your conversation with the cook if you don't mind, given that we have already had several hints as to their nature.

You would like to keep the details of these conversations with the cook to yourself. If for no other reason than to maintain your image. Because it really gets shot to hell during these conversations.

But you can go over the general flow for the Outsider's sake. It usually starts with you entering the kitchen with as much grace as possible, which depending on how bad the day has been can range from "statuesque perfection" to "thumbless ogre with a limp". You begin the conversation every time while he continues to work and attempts to ignore you for the first couple minutes. Whatever the topic of conversation, it always ends up veering towards the same subject, which you would Rather Not Bring Up, if it is all right with the Outsiders. There's a reason you only talk about it with the cook. The shouting usually starts shortly after that. He says that this isn't part of his job. You make a jab at the fact that being the personal cook for a being which does not need food makes for a very superfluous job. Something gets thrown. The kitchen is remodelled, or when you are feeling spiteful, his room. You always change it back afterwards with an apology, but every now and then you leave some small part unchanged when you feel you were justified. By then end you thank him and leave, and when he thinks you aren't aware he lapses into frustrated mumbling.

Like you said. Bad for your image. You'd rather not go into the details.

    >Amaterasu: Talk with anyone else lately?

Well, you just got through an absolutely wonderful, not at all frustrating chat with that fool, whatever he's calling himself right now. And of course you talk to the other servants that flit about the palace. You don't really need servants, as you don't actually have many physical needs for them to serve, but it makes them happy so you let them do it. The problem is you can't really have a meaningful conversation with any of them. Any time you try it simply devolves into so many different variations of "I'm not worthy" and similar phrases.

And then of course there's Tsukuyomi. You always have him to talk to, even if you sometimes wish you didn't.

You might also consider this a conversation, if making observations that the Outsiders can percieve and comment upon can be called a conversation. Out of all that you've had, this is actually one of the nicest, so you suppose you should thank the Outsiders.

Oh, and it appears that they are needed elsewhere. You bid them farewell.

    ==>

You are now Liz, and you have just escaped from what is now becoming the wreckage of the The Lady's Mercy. You are not entirely sure of the details of what transpired on the ship, partially because once the pirates boarded everything descended into chaos, and partially because you never recovered your glasses. What little you were able to see was enough for you: pirates making short work of many of the non-fighting crewmen of The Lady's Mercy, and one familiar fuzzy blur waving what you were pretty sure was his net, fending off pirates fairly well.

Until the dark figure with the spear got to him.

You shudder. You sincerely hope that you didn't witness what you think you witnessed. That was when the other passenger of the lifeboat you are on grabbed you and made a run for it. You look to him and squint as he rows, trying to make out his features better. With his hood down, you can tell that the towering creature has something of a wide head, and very shaggy hair, but beyond that is a mystery unless you decide to invade his personal space. Which, considering that he can fit your head into one of his six-fingered hands, is probably not a good idea until you get to know him better.

Just finished reading through this adventure, and may I just say, every single time Kaylyn speaks, I am reminded of Inspector Cabanela of Ghost Trick. Hopefully someone else here is actually familiar with Ghost Trick. Anyway!

Re: Recursion of Fate[TEXT] (Everyone: Be surprised)

    >HB: Consider your options.

You do that. Here on the Quintessal Sea, outside of any Locations, the borders between the Kingdoms are a bit hazy, but you are fairly certain that you are already within the Kingdom of Cristallum. This worries you. The Delegator has never in the past shown any indication that he would go rogue from his kingdom. Not that he seems to be exceptionally patriotic, he simply enjoys the perks of being a high ranking official too much to give it up. The only way he would leave is if someone offered him something better. So it could be that peace has finally broken between the kingdoms, or at least between Cristallum and the Callix Theocracy. And should war break out between any of the two kingdoms, the other two would not be far behind in joining in.

Then again, he was the only one on the pirate ship who was recognisable as a citizen of Cristallum. This is an intriguing bit of information. If the Delegator is working under his kingdom's orders, then it stands to reason that Cristallum wants to keep this attack anonymous. It would make the wanton slaying of all on board The Lady's Mercy make more sense: you would expect a few high profile clerics of the Theocracy would be worth thousands of pips in ransom.

So if Cristallum does not want war, what were they after? They couldn't possibly know that one of the Scions was aboard, and even if they did, why would they attack one of the heroes prophecied to save all the Kingdoms?

Such thoughts are above you. You are a simple man, and you never had a mind for high politics. That's why you came to the insular Theocracy, to avoid all that.

In any case, right now you have more pressing concerns. Like were are you going to go? You could probably continue on to the City of Roots and Tunnels, but if Cristallum really supported this attack then entering one of their cities, even a minor one, might not be the best idea. Far better to go to a less civilized Location, even if it is still under Cristallum control.

Re: Recursion of Fate[TEXT] (Everyone: Be surprised)

    >Amaterasu: Play dice with the universe.

And the Others are back. So quickly. Then again, you suppose they do exist partially outside the normal flow of time, so it is all relative.

Oh, and they wish for you to play a game. Well, you suppose you should do something to relax. And it has been a while since you've played something with the universe.

You used to play cards with the universe, see. You stopped when it became apparent that he was cheating. But you should be safe with dice. After all, they are completely random.

    >Cosmic Dice: Roll three 7's and a snake eyes.

    Oh that cheating bastard.

    >Liz: Ask the tall, dark, something man if you'll be taking a long trip together.

    Dialog:

So you are going to be going on a journey of indeterminate length with a tall, dark, potentially handsome man whom you've just met, perhaps while being chased by people who want to kill you. It will take ever bit of your restraint not to play out the classic story which should obviously follow.

Oh, but you can imagine, can't you?

"Milady Liz," he calls out, exasperated.

"Milady Liz, please do not run off ahead of me. There could be Cristallum soldiers about."

"You know," the girl says, sitting on a stump to catch her breath, "we've been travelling together for a week. You can stop calling me 'Milady'."

"A deal then," the Herbalist Brother states, "I stop with the honorifics if you stop running out of sight."

Liz screws her face, pretending to be deep in thought, before childishly sticking her tongue out.

"Nah," she says, laughing as she jumps up and rushes forward into the underbrush.

She makes it about three steps before she disappears from view with a crash.

    "MILADY!"

The Herbalist Brother, all thought of stealth discarded at the thought of harm coming to the Scion that had been thrust into his care, charged forward. He pulled up the bush she had vanished in with a single tug of his enormous arm, and saw at once the steep drop that it had hidden. With as much care as he could manage in his distressed state, he slide forward, slowly so as to not inadvertently land on the Scion.

    "Milady! Milady Liz!"

His eyes searched around frantically. The drop had been nothing to him, but he had been expecting it and he was roughly double the Scion's height. He cursed himself for letting her get so far ahead of him. If anything happened to her, it would be his fault.

"Elizabeth! Liz, can you hear me?"

There was a groan off to his right, and immediately he rushed towards it, pulling up anything that tried to prevent him from finding the girl. He found her with a confused expression on her face, lying on her back.

    "Ow..."

    "Are you alright?"

"Hey, you used my name. Didn't call me Milady."

"That is hardly the pressing matter. Are you injured?"

"I bumped my head," she said as she attempted to push herself onto her feet. A flash of pain crossed her face and she landed back into a sitting position, the force of which cause her head to swim.

"You've injured your leg," the Herbalist said, concern obvious in his voice.

    "Let me look at it."

Liz smiled to herself. Despite all that he appeared, the Herbalist Brother was first and foremost a healer. She hissed in pain when he applied a slight pressure to her right ankle, but was thankful for his presence nonetheless. She wondered what would have happened if she had been alone when she fell. Suddenly, she felt a deep sense of regret.

"I'm sorry for running off and worrying you."

"Don't be," he said, all annoyances forgotten as he tended to her as best he could. Gently, surprisingly so for one so imposing, he lifted her up into his arms and carried her like a child.

"It seems to be only a mild sprain," he explained, "We need to get to someplace where you will be able to safely recover."

As he began to lumber away, Liz smiled. Here, in the arms of her protector, her gentle giant, she felt safe.

Admittedly, you kind of had to make up his entire character based on conjecture, and you may have written yourself a little out of character. All in all, probably not one of your better works, but a solid B-, you'd say.

You have gained the Shipcraft ability Giant's Gentleness!

    >Liz: Get out your controller and start contacting people.

Alright, enough with the Shipcraft for the moment. You kind of have important things to to update people on. You decide on talking to Kaylyn first, as she and Chester were still headed to CORAT when you last contacted them.

    Chatlog:

    >Be Kaylyn.

You are now Kaylyn, still on the course with Chester to CORAT. You have just been messaged by your friend Liz about a change in plans, but you are unfortunately unable to answer because you are out like a light. As is Chester. And, as is required by narrative law when two opposite gender individuals who do not care for eachother fall asleep in close proximity, your shoulder is currently being used as his pillow.

When one of you wakes up, this will be increadibly awkward. However, right now the two of you rest peacefully, rocked by the Sea.

    >Scene: Segue

You look into the Sea, the crumbling wreckage you stand on being gently rocked on its waves. By rights you should have just left once The Lady's Mercy began to sink, but you're not done with your job, and in any case the Quintessal Sea never really held the terror for you that it seems to hold for everybody else.

You straighten the tie on your suit. It seems to have come askew during the boarding. You brush off the bits of wood and dust that have accumulated on your suit. Sure, it probably makes you stand out like a sore thumb amonst these ruffians, but name change or no name change, you are who you are.

You are now the DAPPER DIABOLIST, and you are one smooth operator.

    >DD: Pursue objectives in a decidedly cool manner.

On it. And really, at this point there's only one objective. You're just looking for...

Ah. There it is. That took less time than it might have.

You Deck the objective and hear a sound that, if you had to describe it in one word, would be one of disbelief.

    "That's what you came for?"

    >DD: Monologue about your motives.

Ah yes. The captain. One of the few remaining loose ends. You turn to see Kelvan Seastrider lying with his back against the remains of the mast. His robe is stained red, blood from the crew of The Lady's Mercy covering him. None of the blood is from your brigands, not because he didn't kill any, but because his use of netKind usually didn't result in open wounds.

You look at the net lying a few feet away from its now imobilized owner. You are fairly impressed. As far as you can tell, it only has a simple Endurance Embuing. All the damage he inflicted was pure skill. You can respect that. That's why you're going to throw the guy a bone, as it were.
