I was raised a godless heathen. I tried to convince a friend once to give up sleeping in a bed. she just went with chocolate instead, like she did every year. in retrospect, she was a rather obnoxiously and undeservedly holier-than-thou person... I have a Catholic friend now who is was more devout and way less obnoxious and closed-minded about it

I was raised ????????/crazy liberal. Though baptised Lutheran, I attended Catholic services and took catechism. I think I gave up chocolate one time, though it didn't make much difference because we didn't have much chocolate around the house. I might've given up TV another time, but, again, we didn't have much TV. But then my parents stopped caring about church, and I didn't really care either. I was agnostic for a time, then found the light of the Great Spaghetti Monster, then discovered Homestuck.

I never did Lent or New Years Resolutions or anything like that. If I want to change something about myself or my lifestyle, I don't see how having a corresponding time of the year to attempt that in will help anything.

I think New Year's Resolutions are stupid. It's basically a day where all the people on the Earth try to convince themselves that they are going to change their whole lifestyle, one tiny step at a time. Most of the time is essentially a trivial thing, or an unreachable goal like, "I resolve to loose weight." If you really where committed then you would have taken action by now, not sit around and wait for a dumb holiday. I have a deeply rooted personal philosophy that people never change. I pretty much strictly live by this, and most of the time I'm always correct.

I'm kind of a cynical person.

I'm far from a paramount of willpower, but if it's something I give up on, "but it's Lent!" or similar won't matter.

What works best for me is getting friends in on it - either doing the same thing along with me or at least aware that I'm supposed to be doing it - so they can help hold me accountable.

yaaaay! someone is finally taking my don't sleep in a bed for lent advice! this makes me weirdly happy. when I first thought of it like in middle school (nearly a decade ago), I thought it was such a great idea I briefly considered doing it myself just so it wouldn't go to waste. but I didn't want to have to explain to my parents why I was sleeping on the floor, also I like beds, so I didn't.
but if this were an alternate universe where I was a devout Catholic I would totes do that for lent because it's such a basic luxury that we all take for granted

Your typos just get more entertaining. Right now, I imagine that you are falling asleep at your desk. The Lent thing is something I have done every year since I was 10. Though I am not religious, I still like the idea of going without something I think is necessary. For about three of those years I gave up cheese. If you knew me in real life, you would know how crazy that is. My household goes through a pound of cheddar every ten days or so.
Homestuck has taken up a good portion of my waking life, and you guys even more. Going without it in six day chunks might put things in more realistic perspective. Rearrange my priorities, fancy jazz like that. But, and this is what stops me, do I want my priorities to change? For many who follow the practice for Faith reasons, this is a time to reaffirm that. I however, have posted here around 100 times in 24 hours. If I let up, will it seem as attractive a way to spend my time? Would letting my 20 PostPerDay rate fall bring me any real good?

Eh... that got too close to deep for my taste. Maybe I will just restrict myself from using he ipod. That would cut down on a lot of other goofing off.

My opinion is that sometimes a person's interest in something can decrease due to over-exposure. It can also decrease through under-exposure.
In other words, I am of the "No fucking clue" opinion. While we would miss you, it's hard to say what state your interest will be in.
Clearly you will need to post 120 times each sunday to keep up your post rate. That shouldn't be too hard oh wait it really should.

I think, in general, every so often people should try going without something, just to appreciate what they have a little more. I'm way too soft and flabby to actually do something like that though. Maybe for the next week I'll try doing one thing differently each day.

This is what happens when there are no updates. We go resolving and shit. Damn it.

It's funny because no such place is actually mentioned in the Bible. Literally the closest thing that comes to mind is the Lake of Fire in the book of Revelation, but that brings everlasting destruction, not torture.
