    Metal Music Chat

I'm obsessed with metal (and many other genres so don't think I'm a close minded man), and was wondering if anyone else enjoyed the genre a lot as well? Yes I've noticed that many MSPA fans enjoy metal, but fuck it lets go! I've been listening to things like

Have you heard of METALAPOCALYPSE? The cartoon is fucking hilarious and their music is alright, but it's pretty linear and predictable. I still enjoy though.

Also the only "metal" bands I listen to are mainstreamers really: megadeath, a7x, metallica (they're more hard rock), meatloaf, rob zombie (if you count them), Iron maiden...stuff that is more of a combination of the dark tastes of metal with the encorporation of the heavy back beat in hard rock.

Gotta start this thread out right!

    ---------------------------------

For those of you interested, I do a weekly metal show on my college radio station titled Extreme Aggression, every tuesday 4-6PM EST on WRPI. Me and my two co-hosts play music and talk bullshit about metal. I post setlists here (my music selections are the first third of the setlists). Just putting that out there in case any MSPA metalheads are interested.

I love old-school thrash metal. On that note...

Metallica is definitely metal. I count Rob Zombie as well, but I feel inscrutably compelled to add that I prefer White Zombie.

Gzar, out of curiosity, is your radio showed named after the Kreator album of the same name?

I do not always listen to metal. But when I do, I (typically) listen to doom.

Yes it is. Kreator is my favorite thrash band of all time, so I thought I would pay them respect, haha.

Seeing them live was definitely a pleasure to kill for. One of the better shows in my life.

    ---------------------------------

    EDIT:

Holy shit, I've had this band laying around my library for about a month without tasting the sweet nectar of their sound:

Oh yes, yes, yes this brings back so many wonderful memories. Certainly one of my favorite doom acts.

Sleep rules. I've listened through everything related to Sleep. Every album from Asbestosdeath to High on Fire to Om to Kalas to Shrinebuilder. I have loved them since I first got into metal. It doesn't stop being good.

    This album is liquid sex:

You probably know, but the guy behind that awesome band is also the main person in well lots of other great acts. Like High Spirits for instance!

Not sure why it took me so long, but I finally got some Mercyful Fate, loved King Diamonds solo stuff for years.

Awesome. I'll have to try and see them at some point if I get the chance.

Man, Mercyful fate has some great stuff. I can't figure out why I've never gotten into them. Time to go remedy that.

I listen to very little metal these days, a small selection of mostly mid 80s to early 90s stuff has stuck with me though. Black metal is kinda underrepresented right now, but I'd rather not post more than three videos at once.

Absurd's first album used to be somewhat of a guilty pleasure of mine (for a number of reasons, as you can imagine), I find that the re-recorded songs lack all of the naive, punky appeal of the raw originals - mostly because of the vocals. I actually feel like this about many re-recorded songs, compare the later version of Suffocation's "Catatonia" to the one from their first EP - straighter rhythms, simpler riffs, sterile, leaden "modern" production.

Haven't actually listened to any of his other projects, but judging by that he must have a lot of great things to look into.

Devin Townsend ripped off Meshuggah best long before djent was a thing. I love SYL so much more than any Meshuggah and I like Meshuggah.

Mercyful Fate will always be one of my favorite groups. An incredible band in so many ways. Melissa has some of the most beautiful melodies I've heard in metal.

I got a bit burned out on black metal. Maybe I'll post some next, but winter's over so it's hard to get in the mood for it, haha.

    ---------------------------------

I've recently gotten really back into Neurosis. They've always got a place in my heart, being one of the first metal bands I heard (my brother got me into my first Black Sabbath and Judas Priest albums at about the same time, haha), but they've got such a great unique sound. Isis wished they could be Neurosis (don't get me wrong, I love me some Isis and did get to see them live before the split, but Neurosis surpasses them in every way, including still being together).

I was listening to this album sometime last year during an actual hurricane. That impression will never leave.

Also, have some more sludge since it's so good...

Love Iron Monkey, also just noticed the classic selections of death metal you included up there! Completely agree with the At The Gates statement.

Edit: Didn't even see you post about your radio show! Looks interesting enough I'll be sure to try to remember to catch it most tuesdays.

Show's on today. We actually have a lot more classics on todays show than usual. Just a coincidence, since we came up with the setlists shortly before this thread existed, haha.

Hahah just realized that I have class from pretty much that entire time, so that I can only listen to the last few minutes.

I'm back to listening to Pagan Altar again as well, love'em and will forever.

I'm posting here to tell you that this record is amazing and Mastodon really outdone themselves.

Seriously, this is their best since Leviathan.

Wow haven't listened to Mastadon in years, they never really interested me, but it seems they're going full poppy-metal basing it off that song.

Speaking of new albums, very VERY excited to receive this in a few weeks.

Oh man, Testament. They've done a lot of re-recordings of their old stuff, haven't they? And while the re-recordings are good, I generally prefer the originals. Such as:
