I remember reading a battered old copy of a Sonic The Hedgehog CYOA book back in my childhood. I vaguely even remember you had to have a paper and pencil handy to keep track of your inventory! "If you picked up the rope on page 10, you can use it to swing to the rescue! Turn to page 32. If you have no rope, or want to try something else, turn to page 16"
