Watch all episodes in order. I mean, skipping around and watching all the popular episodes first is sort of a stupid idea. If you start off with the best episode, you can only go downhill from there :v

Besides, this show has juuuuuust enough continuity to justify watching it in order.

That would, oddly enough, be "Sonic Rainboom". Also "The Cutie Mark Chronicles" and "A Canterlot Wedding - Part 2".

"Lesson Zero" is a bad spot to start, though, because you should be familiar with Twilight beforehand or it loses a lot of the effect. And Luna Eclipsed is barely about the main characters at all. I'd recommend watching in linear order overall, but throwing in a good later episode near the start might be good just because the first two have very little to do with the rest of the series, and Ticket Master just isn't all that good. I tried linear order, and I very nearly gave up because the first five or so weren't incredibly enticing.

i had made the decision to either watch or not watch the show based on the two-part pilot

and i thought it was pretty cool, there were some parts where i actually laughed, the characters are pretty cool, and the animation is pretty great so ill check in on the rest of the season

Judging a show by the pilot is usually not a good idea, but in MLP's case, it gets really good around the second part. The first one is a little too... I dunno.

    HEY MM HOW'S IT GOING?!

    Also, where were you?

...Also, my all time favourite episode of this show has to be 'A Dog and Pony Show'. Even if I grow to hate the rest of this series someday, that will always remain some of the most entertaining television I have ever seen in my life. /Iamsuchafanboysometimes

Opinions can and do change over time; for example, I may not like Homestuck as much as I did a year ago, to be perfectly honest. And in regards to this show I thought it was good but not something worth watching up until December of last year; my friend showed me the first episode and I wasn't completely impressed, and I only revisited it later.

Not to mention that I am not the same person I was a year ago, or three years ago, or six years ago...

So yeah, people change over time and that could be a thing that could happen. More likely, though, I'll watch it long enough for it to reach the end of it's run, go 'that was awesome' and then move on to something new and exciting.

And also cease to view fanworks extensively, although at this point Zarhon provides most of my fan-content viewing for me, so...

...Wait, why did I give randomized philosophy in response to that statement?

Pilots tend to be different than subsequent episodes. They may be rougher, feature different characters prominently, be different lengths, and so on.

also mobilemammal go away it was so easy not to play bastion while I didn't have to look at your avatar but now my resolve is weakening

Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: 6 Reasons to Love a Little Girl's Show

yeah pilots are made on the cheap without full backing, then approved by the higherups, then made into a full series if they like it, so the rest of the episodes are usually higher quality.

also in the time between pilot and real show, stuff might change, so usually it's jarring

Unless you're a total pessimist I suggest expanding your horizons a little! If you take in more fandom then not only do you get a little bit of a community feeling about yourself but you also get to see more good to counteract the bad that you seem to worry about so much.

This is where the pessimist part comes in BTW, if you only focus on the bad then it's really hard to squeeze in some good! Once when I was at a religious meeting the speaker gave a really good example: if you take a new sponge, and you dip it into clean water, then squeeze, you get clean water out. If you dip it into dirty water and squeeze, you get dirty water. If you dip it into dirty water and then dip it into clean water, you still get mostly dirty water when you squeeze. But! If you dip it into clean water, THEN dirty water, the water is mostly clean when you squeeze!

The lesson is take in as much good as you can, so that there's no room for the bad to make you feel bad. Also I hope my late night stupor didn't mangle that little paragraph up there.

Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: 6 Reasons to Love a Little Girl's Show

Nah, I got the point. Healthiest way to approach any show you wish to view fanworks for, correct?

It's sort of abnormal for me to get involved in any fandoms period, though; I'm more likely to seek out larger and larger amounts of creative works then to get too immersed in any given fandom. Generally, I consider it a good thing to be consuming a decent number of creative works at any given moment and was fairly concerned when I was viewing MLP and MLP-related stuff almost exclusively for a while at the start of the year. Of course, Homestuck, MLP and to a lesser extent Korra seem to be exceptions to the 'I do not do fandoms' rule, and even then the work that I'm focusing on a lot seems to cycle over time (I remember when One Piece and JJBA were my 'central focus' in terms of creative works). Then again, if I hang out here a lot it's because I like some of the sillier discussions that occur in this thread from time to time.

...Wait, I talked about myself way to much there.

Um...Um...Um...back on track back on track back on track...

    ...Pony.

Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: 6 Reasons to Love a Little Girl's Show

Honestly, the more I view fanworks, the less I like MLP. Kinda like the more I talk to homestuck cosplayers and they are massive douchebags, the less I like homestuck.

Also, thanks for agreeing with my thing about pilots. There are plenty of shows with very different pilots. Adventure Time and Phineas and Ferb spring to mind. Hell, Parks and Rec is one of my favorite shows, but I hated the pilot. Arrested Development had like, one funny joke in the pilot, and it was only funny because it was censored. The actual show was fucking hilarious.

Oh, and I was at my GF's where I didn't bring my lappy.

    Octavia

There's no smile on her face
    Playing cello, maybe bass
Can't be sure what she plays
    Always prim and straight-laced
Pink bow tie on this dame
    Octavia is her name

    Inkie Pie; could be her
    Pinkie's sis; can't be sure
All we know is she plays
    Either cello or bass
In a band on the stage
    Inner calm, inner rage

    Mane so neat, not wavia
    Not for our Octavia
    Time to drive her crazia
    Whatcha like, Octavia?

    Vinyl Scratch, just a friend
    Maybe more in the end
Does she like her at all?
    Face a mask, violet eyes
    What she lacks she'll despise
    Octavia, standing tall

And into the out-of-context thread this goes.

@ CLM - Nice little poem you got there. Excellent job on it.

Although since the fandom basically gives these 5-Second background characters personality traits, consensus and individual headcannons create personalities, correct?

Because if so I say she completely lacks any sense of humour.

As in, she is medically incapable of finding anything funny and finds the sound of laughter to be physically painful, like that Kam Fong guy from jPod.

I can do this because a lot of these background characters are communal OC's, right?

Maybe I should try writing a character like that period, see how they would interpret the world and whatnot...

@ mM - As I said, I'm just now succeeding in cutting down on the amount of fanworks I've been viewing.

If only viewing the posts of 'haters' and radical feminists hadn't taken it's place, but it shouldn't be too hard to deal with that sort of thing.

And I'm not going to post any of that here because I can just see it causing some sort of shitstorm wait what?

Throw them in a sitcom or something where they're not dating but instead are looking for other ponies to date, or some more complicated situation instead, and suddenly I might care, but as it is... meh.

(I could handle them in a relationship as wacky secondary characters, I suppose. But as the main characters of a story, no. Predictable beginning to end.)
Well I have this headcanon that Octavia, Vinyl, Derpy, Doctor, Bon-Bon and Lyra are living in a sitcom like situation together. And there is no romance in the beginning. OctaScratch only happens for a little while but they just stick to being best friends. ♥
