It appears the squares do represent inventory, although you can only access the GREEN and RED spaces.

Whatever it is, it blew up the train. Dirtnamese soldiers have been trying that for years to no avail.
So this thing is probably incredibly powerful.

To be honest, this doesn't seem terribly great so far, but I know you're good at these kind of adventures. I'll keep reading.

The STRANGE THING does not return the greeting. Instead, it commands you to give it the BOOK.
This is incredibly scary!
