Expanding upon my 'midichlorian' thing, magic is like the use of IMAGINATION.
The Cake's unicorn kid can walk through walls because she believes she can.
Twilight is in a posture against the Ursa because she has to think hard on her plan.
It's like when you see some people play driving games. They tilt their bodies with each turn.
A unicorn's ability is limited by her imagination. Which leads me to believe that most unicorns aren't very creative. Except Rariree and Twalot.
Magic being limited by what they think they can do is reasonable, I guess. Twilight's talent is magic itself, so she goes into each new spell knowing that she has a chance to succeed at it, while a unicorn whose talent is, say, sculpting, would likely be biased against anything unfamiliar and therefore more prone to failure/discouragement.
I think there's also a physical aspect involved, too, as shown by Twilight dealing with the Ursa. The sheer weight of it combined with the wind chime/water tower/milk multitasking was causing her to visibly strain. I'd imagine using magic to do heavy lifting would cause exhaustion in nearly the same way any other pony would get exhausted lifting boulders and the like, though I'm not sure if it would apply to just the mind or if the imagination aspect of it would put strain on the legs and back as well.
I'm just talking out of my ass at this point and I'm terrible with theorizing, so I'll just sit back and let this whole debate continue on without me.

I'm just spouting ideas off of my head.
I don't expect anyone to listen to me.
All these ideas more of less came from yesterday when I read a fic in which Rainbow could fly without using her wings just because she believed she could.

Because Star Wars is so quoted and parodied that there's no point in watching the actual movies once you've seen it parodied so often you can piece together the plot from disconnected gags.

wow that was exactly my line of thought how did you know
This picture gets more confusing the more I look at it.

La Fluer, that's right?
TeleKINESIS. Thank you, Violet. I can't believe I confused the two.

This idea also puts Pinkie and Applejack's insane stamina in a light. If unicorns and pegasi need this extra energy and all ponies can be born as a different type from their parents (It only takes one relative, apparently.), then earth-ponies should have this potential energy. I'd also guess that the mane six (or at least, TS, RD, and PP) are all ahead of the curve when it comes to this natural magic.

My idea is that all Earth ponies have this energy, but since they can't use it, it just gets pent up and makes them physically stronger. Pinkie Pie, who HAS found a way to use those energies, isn't as physically strong as most Earth ponies unless she needs it for a gag.

If you're going to piece Star Wars together from gags you should read Blue Milk Special because the gags are comprehensive and in order
EDIT:In the order that the films and specials were made, that is. Not in-setting chronological order.
Re: My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic: Thread 7: Derpy is NOT the seventh mane pony
I'm uncomfortable with saying that one's magical limits are purely a matter of what one believes them to be. It really doesn't explain Twilight's magic school exam at all, for one thing. More generally, it doesn't seem to be how the ponies themselves perceive magic to work, and I don't think that's the best direction for a theory to take. Magic is quite consistently portrayed as consisting of discrete, learnable "spells," of which Twilight knows some finite (albeit increasing) number and other unicorns know other finite (but lower) numbers. Starswirl created spells. If any unicorn at all can master any spell at all given sufficient confidence, you'd think that someone would have noticed this.
It also kinda contradicts the general cutie mark narrative. The CMC have plenty of confidence (usually), but their plans still don't work out because they're not biologically predisposed towards those fields. Trying to set up an entirely opposing set of rules for magic feels like, again, the wrong direction to go in.
On the other hand, Fluttershy can outrace Rainbow Dash while pulling a balloon behind her. Meh.
Re: My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic: Thread 7: Derpy is NOT the seventh mane pony
Hmm.. that is an interesting point.
I personally am MORE likely to read/watch something if it has been parodied endlessly.
I like being in on jokes. I like understanding references.
Identifying myself with Candy corns! And now for my dramtic coming out that does not matter because nobody reads signatures! Have you any interest at all in TvTropes? Click on this thing and several of your wildest dreams will come true.
I got fed up with the spoiler dungeon in my previous signature. It was confusing and I did not like it. The basics boil down to this: The guy in my avatar is some variation on the work of stock photographer Gilles DeCruyenaere, probably edited insanely by a person who is super awesome. There is a fifty percent chance that that person is Ash, but sometimes other people get in on it too. AVATAR BY NIMZ WHO IS AMAZING
Also I made a tumblr because I hate myself. And now these days you will find me mostly on the tumbr. I do love you much forums. We had a good go of it. But tumblr fits a person with my attention span so much better. I still check here often, but I do not post as much. Fell free to contact me where ever, and if unsure, assume I love you.
God I can't stay mad at Noir.
He's just.
He's like when a tiny puppy murders a squirrel and brings the corpse into your house as a present to you and it's wagging its tail and is SO PROUD of itself.
Then it goes into your house, tears your couch apart, and shits on all of your carpets.

Going to handwave everything I said and make a set of semi-new arguments and opinions.
You don't go to art school and instantly become amazing at art.
Art schools probably teach students about theories on art and commonly used devices or something. What do I know.
Some people probably don't even need art school.
Schools should give students a better understanding on their respective subjects.
Using magic is sort of like muscle memory for activities.
Pole-vaulting looks scary as hell, but if I tried it for long enough, I'm sure I could get reasonable success.
Twilight could participate in all of the Olympic events if that was the case.
Starswirl created new Olympic events.
the cmc arent doing what they are destined to do
scootaloo does sports. applebloom builds shit. sweetie screams in a mike.

Re: My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic: Thread 7: Derpy is NOT the seventh mane pony
Well it's only one class, and it's Drama. I mean it's more of a 'bridge the gap between high school and actually taking a full set of college classes so I'm not sitting on my butt doing nothing for a year'
I can probably find some other class of something that starts later if I really tried
Re: My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic: Thread 7: Derpy is NOT the seventh mane pony
Events that take place on the first day of a college class:
The syllabus is given out.
Every page of the syllabus is read out loud.
Depending on the class size there's some talk about add/drop forms, waitlists, auditing, and so forth.
Maybe you get to play a name game.
Some reading is assigned.
Absolutely nothing else.
So it depends on if the class is full or not (i.e. whether your spot would be given to someone else were you not to show up), whether you can find someone else to be there and pick up a syllabus for you, and whether the professor gives their consent for you to miss it. All logistical stuff.
